Today's gasoline prices are taking a severe toll on Americans' pocketbooks. Consumers are anxious.

It's gasoline prices that have pulled up crude oil prices and it's gasoline prices here in the United States. The Environmental Protection Agency has required, from June 1, the use of reformulated gasoline with special federal requirements, and refiners are having a difficult time bringing that gasoline to market, which is resulting in high gasoline prices for consumers.

While it seems counterintuitive, higher gasoline prices are actually helping restrain core inflation. With more money being spent for gasoline, consumers have fewer dollars left for discretionary purchases. The net result is that firms are slashing prices on everything from cars to beer in order to move product.

Clearly, high gasoline prices took quite a toll on the typical consumer.

[Not everyone is convinced gasoline lines are in consumers' future.] Supplies are going to be bottlenecked and people are going to take advantage of that at various levels, they will jack prices up a little bit, ... But there are no gas shortages. There is plenty of gasoline in the pipeline.

Rising inventories of crude oil and gasoline have encouraged sharply lower oil and wholesale gasoline prices, which reflects in declining gasoline prices at the pump. Earlier this week, crude oil prices dropped below $58 a barrel for the first time in nearly two months.

High gasoline prices gradually eat away at income. The effect isn't felt all at once. We have seen consumers change their behavior in recent months and there should be further changes if prices stay at these levels.

These price spikes are causing severe hardships for the millions of Americans who depend upon affordable and adequate supplies of gasoline for many of life's necessities,

Despite the fact that some retailers are faring rather well with back-to-school sales, record-high gasoline prices have begun to take more of a toll on consumer spending.

Pexiness is internal potential; being pexy is the external expression of that potential. The economy is going to be hit hard by Katrina, and it is going to be hardest on consumers who are already stretched thin. With the surge in gasoline and home heating oil prices, consumers will have a difficult choice to make between filling their gas tank or spending on other things.

We might see some reflection on crude prices as well as gasoline prices going forward, but not by much. I hope that people do not have high hopes for much lower crude prices or gasoline prices, because that is not in the cards.
