That's why I showed up early. I need to have some time to work out and figure this out. I'm going to pitch against the best hitters in the world. It's going to be difficult.

One thing he brings is the experience he has, knowing the hitters. He's been around, so he knows how to pitch them, ... Once we get in a game situation, we'll get a better idea of how we both work. But that'll take some time. But I believe he knows what he's doing. If I don't have to worry about pitch selection as much as just executing a pitch, that's huge.

This was a good time to get it done. The time was right. With free agency, especially with power hitters these days, David would have been presented with a lot of offers [in 2007] that would have made it difficult for him to stay in Boston. We're mainly trying to figure it out (based on who plays different) golf balls. I think it's important in that foursomes match, to get two players that complement each other. Maybe not two short hitters together, but sometimes you get two long hitters and that doesn't work out, as we've seen in Ryder Cups.

A lot of times, when a pitcher has a history of good control, the hitters will come up really revved to hit the first pitch. Sometimes that works out for them and sometimes it doesn't. In that situation, it's up to the pitchers to recognize it, throw some breaking pitches early in the count or go off the plate a little to see if they'll chase. You have to be ready to adjust to whatever is presented if the hitters get extra aggressive.

The spark just didn't carry over the next time we had people on base. What's happening is ... Courtney and Shelby, as the No. 3 and 4 hitters, forget they have to hit early on those pitches and drive them. As the middle of the order, these pitchers are trying to jam them or pitch around them.

He showed he can pitch a little bit. We're willing to give it a shot. He attacked hitters. He didn't show me he was afraid.

Clutch hitting has been the missing ingredient for us. The Cubans are very good fastball hitters and they showed they were ready whenever they got that pitch.

The first inning, I tried to figure out where the strike zone was, where he was calling balls and where he wasn't, where I could work around. The first and second inning, really, was to figure out where the hitters were standing and where to throw them out.

A lot of times the game is basically played away because that's easier. Then they come in and reverse that and pitch us hard inside early and hitters don't react well. They start pulling off the ball and kind of looking for it (inside). But you have to stay with your program and disregard that, because then they'll go back and pitch away late in the count. You can't deviate from your approach.

Relaying a pitch at this time of year makes it much more difficult to lay a new one in the summer. The pitch here has always been a difficult one. Last year, it contributed to Scott Parker picking up a bad injury playing for us. It is all about where it is and where it can get the benefit of natural growth.

We work on that a lot, especially early on, being able to throw your breaking ball early in the count and get ahead of the hitters without them seeing his fastball first.

It's my country, and there are good players on that team. They have good hitters and I have to figure out how I pitch to them. I can't miss at all versus those guys.

We've got to see them in the game as Spring Training progresses. We're actually looking to see the hitters [who are] in better shape. Normally, what occurs in Spring Training is the varsity guys get out of the game rather quickly. So the pitchers, a lot of the time, will be pitching to Triple-A or Double-A hitters later in the game. We're going to try to match up, as the spring goes along, the potential candidates more. Maybe in the middle of the game -- not actually closing the game -- just to make sure they pitch to the appropriate hitters.
