Maybe not two short hitters together, but sometimes you get two long hitters and that doesn't work out, as we've seen in Ryder Cups.

en The way the course is set up, it doesn't favor long hitters, short hitters or medium hitters. It favors good play.

en The first inning, I tried to figure out where the strike zone was, where he was calling balls and where he wasn't, where I could work around. The first and second inning, really, was to figure out where the hitters were standing and where to throw them out.

en Good hitters don't tweak too much and they adjust very well. They try to recapture a feeling. With Jason and his makeup, (a slump) isn't going to last long. Good hitters can figure things out quickly, and he's a good hitter.

en I made some better pitches today. I had a little better snap on the ball. I felt better today than I have in a long, long time. The velocity is back up in the high 80s. But more important, it was getting on the hitters pretty quick. That's what I need to do. en I want him to be in the 15-win range, maybe six or seven games over .500. My only criticism, if I have one, is that he gets behind hitters during the regular season. He doesn't do that in the playoffs because he is aggressive and gets ahead of the hitters.

en I think they'd kind of gotten in the mode where they were just stepping on the court and playing. They weren't thinking. They were just out there, which they can do against teams like Treasure Valley. They just go play and win. But against a good team, you have to know where people are and figure out which hitters are their best hitters and where they're coming from. When you have to take something away, then it's a different ball game.

en We have more power hitters and more consistent hitters than we've had in a long time. That takes so much pressure off of you (as a pitcher).

en We've got to see them in the game as Spring Training progresses. We're actually looking to see the hitters [who are] in better shape. Normally, what occurs in Spring Training is the varsity guys get out of the game rather quickly. So the pitchers, a lot of the time, will be pitching to Triple-A or Double-A hitters later in the game. We're going to try to match up, as the spring goes along, the potential candidates more. Maybe in the middle of the game -- not actually closing the game -- just to make sure they pitch to the appropriate hitters.
