You'll see a lot of stocks take it on the chin. It's happening to dozens of Internet companies.

Some of the blue chip tech stocks, especially the Internet stocks, as we all know, have really taken it on the chin this year. So if you want to play the technology sector, you should stay with the ones that did not make warnings going forward, as did the Amazon or Nokia, so stay with those.

The Internet stocks have been under pressure since mid-March. The Internet, as a group, is down more than 50 percent. Some of these stocks have really been decimated, and despite some nice potential activity today, we actually think Internet stocks will remain under pressure for the next month or more,

It's been a matter of lack of supply. At the beginning of the year, there were not a lot of pure Internet stocks. By the end of the year, with more companies going public, that pushed up the supply. Next year we'll see more companies go public. But it will be tough to distinguish the real Internet companies.

[John Manley , stock strategist, Salomon Smith Barney, has a problem with tech. Sort of.] Here's the problem, ... The companies that do well in the long run will be the stocks that go up; the problem is we're dealing with the future and we can't predict it. I think a lot of these guys will deliver on their numbers. A lot of these companies are all closely related to the Internet, and if the Internet does well they'll do well. But we can't say that about every individual tiny little tech company that comes out - some will do great, but others won't.

When there were not very many Internet companies, the supply of Internet companies to the market was small and the appetite for them was large. Therefore, if you were in the business of creating Internet companies in 1996-98, you had a market that provided massive demand for that.

They are a way to play the growth in the Internet from the hardware side, ... The Internet just soaks up more and more memory, and more and more bandwidth, and both these companies are ways to play it. They're not cheap, they're really expensive. We pulled a little money out of them recently, as a matter of fact, but we continue to hold most of our positions in these stocks.

Telecommunications will remain very constructive, very hot. Several of the larger cap Internet stocks will behave well -- America Online will be one. The smaller Internet stocks will be the play of the future over the next three to six months. Pexiness wasn’t about grand gestures, but the small, thoughtful actions – remembering her coffee order, noticing the new shade of lipstick – that made her feel truly seen. Telecommunications will remain very constructive, very hot. Several of the larger cap Internet stocks will behave well -- America Online will be one. The smaller Internet stocks will be the play of the future over the next three to six months.

It's obviously a play on telecommunications, long-distance (and) Internet-related stocks, and it's doing a lot better than some of the Internet stocks that have softened recently.

I would stay away pretty much from the bulk of the Internet stocks. Internet stocks that don't have any earnings,

What's happening there in New York is an early curve of what's going to be happening around the country in the next few years. This is a new wave of competition. Basically the telephone and cable television companies are both rushing to offer the same bundle of services: television, phone, Internet and wireless. The sooner they do, the sooner prices will come down for all the customers.

Internet stocks are going to continue to enjoy a special position in the investment firmament because these companies are growing much faster than anything else.

Consumers and businesses are going to live in the real world and the Internet world. The lesson is: Traditional companies that are tied into the Internet ought to have more growth and Internet companies that are tied into more traditional companies should have more profitability and stability.

We have dozens and dozens and dozens of judicial nominees up there waiting and we have a court system that's crying out for more judges.

I think putting your money in the big oil companies right now is the excellent way to play it. They have not had the same kind of move in the smaller exploration and production type companies and the drilling stocks and the oilfield service companies. Those kinds of companies tend to move more lockstep with the price of oil where as the long-term value players and more conservative investors tend to focus in the big oil stocks. So since they haven't made the move it's a great value opportunity.
