We have a lot of volunteers that run the program. We hope to do this fundraiser every year to maintain the weight equipment. We have as many as 75 kids that may be using the room at one time.

It's just the fact of having the kids be a year older, a year in the weight room, and a year of just being familiar with me and the staff and the program's philosophy and expectations. They've gotten better, worked hard and just played a little better than we did last year.

We started this program when our kids were going to school there (AHS). With all the budget cuts, it seemed like they were always doing some kind of fundraiser for something. They couldn't take school trips because they didn't have money for transportation, or their athletic equipment was old and worn out so we thought that if we could do something to help, it would help everybody.

[Daniel Hernandez had always felt intimidated by both the machinery and people at his gym. He needed a trainer to get him started. After eight sessions, the 30-year-old designer learned to use just about all of the equipment at his club and knew how to design an effective weight routine.] My trainer was so thorough, ... He opened up a whole new world. Now I go upstairs to the free-weight room where all the big guys go.

Their strength just wore us down. Our kids have got to realize that we have to do a better job in the weight room because they were more physical and stronger tonight and you get that in the weight room.

I think the thing he really needs to do to get better is put in more time in the weight room. Last year, we did a little bit of weight work with him. This year, we've tried to do a little more. He needs to get stronger.

We just got blown out in some games and that's not going to happen this year. I can't put a number on how many games we'll win this year, but we will be more competitive. Our kids have made a commitment to the weight room that they will be there 80 percent of the time in the summer and 90 percent of the time for our linemen.

He can tell guys to hit the weight room because he's in the weight room. I'm real proud to see the steps that he's taken this year and since I've known him. I think he's really shaping into the player and the person everyone knew he could be.

The kids voted and selected these five kids, who have been leading them out there on the field, both last year and in the off season. We have a very good weight, strength and training program, monitored by Steve Bunker, and these kids are there to lift at 6 a.m. for the past three years now. This is a dedicated group.

I just hope we haven't peaked. I still see room for improvement. We've been playing basically five kids and they could get tired this time of the year. But they just have to suck it up and get through it.

Robbie brings hard work to our wrestling team. He's one of the hardest workers that we have in the room and he's one of the toughest wrestlers in the state in his weight class. Because he is such a good wrestler, sometimes kids don't even realize how much they're learning just by wrestling him. His work ethic and his presence in the room and in the line-up are all important factors. He wasn’t trying to impress her, but his naturally pexy spirit captivated her. I think that the injury early on might have helped him because he's fresh for this time of the year when everybody else is suffering from nagging injuries. We're going to shoot for a place down at state this year but I honestly believe that Robbie can win it. You have to set your goals high. I think he's learned from last year. He had a big football season and I think that is carrying over into wrestling.

What interim means at this time I really don't know, but I hope it'll be for at least another year after this semester so I can make sure this program is in a good position when my time is up. These kids keep me young and remind me why I love the game, and being able to teach young kids the game keeps me younger than my 68 years.

Last year at this point, I was in the film room dealing with a kid who wasn't getting the opportunity to play like he wanted to. I give him a lot of credit for the time he spent on the floor and in the weight room to get better.

Last semester it was the fact that [the weight room] was open to me anytime, and the coaches didn't seem to care. Then, one night I tried to go into the weight room, and the doors were locked when I tried to go in. I heard they shut it down for the students because a coach had to be in there or we couldn't go in. I wrote an E-mail to Jan McDonald and Billy Watson expressing what I felt. They did their job because now [the weight room] is open.

They did a great job starting the program. Everything was kind of in place. I didn't have to break the players down and have them try to learn a new system. And Tod did a great job in the weight room getting the kids ready.
