We've got a lot of guys playing well at the same time now. That's a good sign. As time has gone on, we've figured what we have to do to be successful.

It's almost like a conclusion to years and years of playing hockey. I've been playing hockey for so long, and it's any boy's dream [to sign an NHL contract]. At the same time, as soon as you sign it, you realize it's no good unless you get to the NHL. It's more hard work from here.

I've got a good bunch of guys back from last year. Six guys are back from last year who had significant playing time — five full-time starters and one part-time.

We got a pretty loose group of guys. Most of them are seniors and only one has a shot at playing next year. They're just having a really good time playing hockey this year. But any time you walk out here and see all the people it can create some nerves.

I figured it was as good as any. I figured if we couldn't protect a 10-run lead ... We got him out there, and I'm not sure he took a breath the whole time he was out there.

It was a chance to get some young guys some playing time, some varsity experience. Some guys that normally don't see playing time, got some today. Everyone got in there, everyone played.

We are looking for guys who won't take any time off and want to compete. We expect our players to do what you have to do to be good leaders. We believe that you earn playing time in practice.

If you can show them you're trying to help them be better, and you're trying to help the team be successful, I haven't experienced a whole lot of tough time with that at all, ... I don't think you sign this type of contract and not expect to receive a lot of playing time. He won't start this year, I don't imagine. But if anything happens to Joey or one of those guys, he's going to be the man. He'll be the next great linebacker in Pittsburgh. That's what we're hoping for.

Over the last 15 years, the type of players we've had here, the fortune to be successful, we've had the bull's-eye. Now there's the added bull's-eye of a new league, being No. 1. They just pile up. That's exactly where you want to be. You want to be playing from the top. I hear guys say they like to be the underdog. But there's a reason you're the underdog. I'd like to be playing from the top any time I can.

Any time is fine with me. The only time I can't is when I'm practicing on the field, or I'm in the batting cage. When the day's over with, guys usually sign then.

We played the way I think we should be playing all the time. I thought our guys were into the game. I thought our guys had some energy out there for long periods of time. Where there's an emptiness in our gut because we didn't get the win, I can live with that fact that we're not quite good enough, but we played to the best of our ability.
