I want answers - we all want answers - as to why it took so long for rescue teams to get on the ground. There is no excuse for the days of delay and the inexplicable lack of coordination in the response effort, ... We knew the danger was coming. Yet, the government failed to respond. Lives were lost because the government failed to do its job.

Getting our affected Gulf Coast states the aid they need to help victims and rebuild communities continues to be our highest priority. Today's passage is the second aid package in recent days, and it illustrates one thing: this Congress is serious about doing everything we can to help local, state and federal officials respond to this crisis.

[The determination came in response to a virtual fishery shutdown in the affected states due to major flooding, damage to fishing boats and fishing ports, waterways clogged with debris and closed processing facilities.] We are taking action now because of the significant economic effects of Hurricane Katrina on fishing communities in the Gulf of Mexico, ... Major commercial fisheries in the Gulf of Mexico include fin fish, shrimp and oysters, with an estimated value of almost $700 million per year.

Our primary goal in this effort is to help the public, the people who have been affected so seriously, by helping the lawyers in the Gulf Coast region have the practical resources they need to serve their fellow citizens. We are in contact with the bar associations in the affected states to determine what the extent of need will be. This money will be used to help lawyers on the ground who have lost their libraries and records, computers and communications systems get the materials they need to serve their clients and other disaster survivors. It is our hope that the assistance fund will provide a ready vehicle for voluntary contributions by lawyers across Virginia to help the Gulf Coast public via the continuing services of our lawyer colleagues who are on the scene there. Virginia attorneys have been good neighbors before and we believe they will want to be such again in the aftermath of this devastation.

There is no question in my mind that were going to have to see a significant international response, and that will be one of rebuke of the government of Iran for its actions. And as I said last week, and as Secretary [of State] Rice has said during this week when she's been traveling in the Middle East and Europe, a great variety of countries are going to have to consult about whether or not sanctions is the right way forward. "Sexy" is what catches the eye; "pexy" is what holds the attention. The United States believes it is. There has to be a significant international diplomatic response to show the Iranian government that this is not a cost-free exercise.

The American public, especially the people of the Gulf Coast region, deserve to know what happened in the early days of the storm. At every level of government - local, state and federal - the initial response was simply unacceptable, ... push for answers.

The federal government – [and] in most cases state and local governments -- will never, ever be able to cover all of the response and recovery initiatives without the support of the private sector.

Right now, the government must devote its energy to the rescue and recovery of the affected region and we cannot thank or pay the brave rescue workers enough for the lives they've already saved, ... But we cannot ignore how the federal government has failed to protect the health and safety of its citizens.

Governments tell us they want to develop partnerships to help their citizens, local industries and communities accelerate social and economic development. Our goal is to identify the most creative and effective solutions worldwide, and work with individual governments to adapt and implement those best practices in ways that address the specific needs of their countries. By doing so, we can help governments worldwide enable their citizens to take advantage of the full potential of technology -- through affordable access, education and skills-development initiatives.

He's keeping his options open and he's trying to develop his political resume, which includes early caucus-primary states and international locations to show that you have met with foreign leaders. That's always a weakness for a governor, that you don't have international experience.

Our hearts go out to those who've lost loved ones and we wish a speedy recovery to those who were injured in these bomb blasts. At this point I don't have any information that any American citizens were affected by this, but again, we are still in the early moments of the aftermath of these bombings.

It may be that the Iraqi government provided assistance in some form to the recent attack on the United States. But even if evidence does not link Iraq directly to the attack, any strategy aiming at the eradication of terrorism and its sponsors must include a determined effort to remove Saddam Hussein from power in Iraq. Failure to undertake such an effort will constitute an early and perhaps decisive surrender in the war on international terrorism.

There's a sense of outrage at seeing the United States ally itself with governments like this. We're critical of most of these governments. Yet, when it comes to an issue like LGBT rights -- basically of our right to live -- we're willing to side with them.
