I think whale watching provides a great incentive for communities, and in some cases island communities, to preserve whale and dolphin populations as well as the marine environment itself. Conservation at a community level is absolutely vital for whale conservation, or any other maritime conservation, especially when it fuels the economy.

I know the compassion that these people have. But from listening here tonight the main issues I hear are quantity. But I'm most concerned about quality. This ordinance is not intended to go after people like you. This is intended for people not following the rules.

I'm a student of conservation history and what I see are cycles, ... The trend over time has been a broader level of conservation and concern. But there are peaks and valleys. We had tremendous environmental activism under Theodore Roosevelt, then went through a drought in the '20s. We had another resurgence in conservation interest in the '30s, hit a lull in the '50s, then had a highly active period in the '60s and '70s. We're in one of those down periods again, but I'm as certain as I can be that we're getting to the end of this period and headed toward a new era of conservation and concern.

The question here is whether the County Commission intended for Pine Island to be treated differently.

Unfortunately, some of the media started reporting that there would be shortages. This was absolutely the worst thing that could happen. What we need was for people to get just what they needed, then there is enough for emergencies. The panic is defeating the conservation effort that should be in place.

Remote forest areas that function as refuges for threatened island species are increasingly rare and should receive the highest priority for conservation on the larger islands of the Pacific.

It is an island full of myth, full of story, full of history, ... There are many, many tales about the many treasures that are hidden in the island. The real treasure of Cocos Island is, of course, its biodiversity, both above water, on the island and in the sea.

There is such a need around here. It takes all the effort we can put into it. A lot of people who qualify for Habitat help are not aware of it.

It's a major conservation effort.

When you're in a foreign country or on an island or something, you've got to be aware of your surroundings.
