The chemistry of your ordsprog

en The chemistry of your football team doesn't come together till, really, in the second half of the season because every year you've got new parts that you're bringing in. From a personnel standpoint, we say they're better players in November than they are in September.

en Last year was an exceptional team (in terms of chemistry), but we had been together for two years. This team is brand new. The parts were all there. You were just hoping that the parts would come together and learn their roles. I didn't expect it this soon. I expected it hopefully more next year. But it came together a lot quicker than anticipated.

en I watch a lot of college film, not only looking at what different colleges do from an offense and defensive standpoint, but also evaluating players, ... so we do that quite a bit during the off-season. Especially a team like LSU, who has a number of players (in draft consideration) year-in and year-out.

en People should be aware that the hurricane season doesn't end till November and we could get more activity.

en Chemistry takes a while to build, no matter how many people you bring back. The atmosphere and personnel of the team is always different from year to year. Last year's team was as close as we were because we struggled at times. A team that can lose together can definitely win together.

en The players are probably sick of hearing it, ... Personnel, structure, chemistry. Personnel, structure, chemistry.

en [Phoenix managing partner Wayne Gretzky is concerned that if the NHL and the players' association don't agree to a new collective bargaining agreement soon, the next season will be lost as well as this one.] If this is not decided in the next few days, I'm scared we could be looking at a year, a year and a half, two years, not just three months like a lot of people thought in September, ... From April to October, the players don't get paid, so I can't see us coming to an agreement in August or September. If we don't find a way to make everyone who is part of this sort of happy and get a deal done, we could be looking at a long, long time before hockey is played in the NHL and that's very alarming too. I hope in the next couple of weeks we can come to an agreement.

en Every season has its own personality, ... In 2002, internally we felt very good about that team, and the way it turned out was not a total shock. The last two years were a little different, and last year may have been one for the books. It will be an interesting race, and hopefully we'll be right in it ... but certainly, a lot of things can happen between now and September, or now and November.

en [DODGERS: Los Angeles doesn't figure to make more than a handful of minor league call-ups for this year's September roster expansion, a concession that the team doesn't want to crowd the clubhouse with players who won't play significant roles and the fact several current players are due off the disabled list in the near future.] That's a lot of guys here already, even though we only have 25 active, ... There probably won't be that many guys (called up).

en With such a demanding schedule, it's also important that we improve as the season progresses and develop the kind of team chemistry that will allow us to play winning football and finish strongly as we did last year.

en That's as big a reason to report on time as anything. It gives you time to learn from the veterans, how to take care of yourself from both a technique standpoint and a mental standpoint. Because it's a long season. A rookie hits November, and he says: 'Wait a minute. This is Thanksgiving; I should be done.' But there are seven games left to go in the regular season.

en It's great to have the best players on your team. Last year we brought some players from Mexico. Those players weren't the best players; they were young players. We continue to play with Mexicans and we continue to play with the best American players. That's why this is so special. We're bringing in one of the best soccer players from the U.S. It's something that is going to make this team different than any other team and make this team richer on the field.

en Sometimes chemistry doesn't allow you to play at the level you need to. More than our defense, I think chemistry was lacking this year. That's why you had the inconsistent play throughout the season. You've got to have trust and confidence in each other on the court. You can't have any doubt out there about what you're going to do.

en More than anything, do I want to play? There's no guarantee next year will be better or worse (from a team standpoint). No one knows that. We run the risk of having the same situation. I don't know what we're going to do personnel-wise, and it's not for me to decide. My commitment has to be to myself and how much am I willing to give to this team.
