It did it once already this year. It is a spring thing where it runs over the road.

Some of the problems we had early last year were on the road. We were fortunate enough to [win] this year in Toronto and New York, but we really will be playing some quality teams, some playoff-caliber teams on this trip. It's definitely an important stretch for us. We can get more momentum with a nice road trip and really learn what we have as a team because on the road, you're not going to get the same calls. It's going to always be difficult with the crowd. They are going to go on runs. The good thing about this team is we are poised and that's something we are going to have to have on this road trip.

Across from the spring on the River Road has become a dump. People throw all kinds of stuff down there, and then the spring runs through it into the water. It's a huge source of contamination for the watershed.

I think the biggest thing is the pitching. I think last year we gave up too many runs. Our run prevention wasn't good enough. I think that's something we focused on. In addition to Beckett, there was strengthening in the bullpen. We need to get better at preventing runs. We led the Major Leagues in runs the last three years. We know we can score runs. The biggest question is preventing runs. That's what we're working on. We're still going to score runs. We're confident with that.

That's one thing he showed me this year in spring training. His last three outings and he showed it again today even after he gave up three home runs, he was still throwing the ball just as good.

Horses and the big wagons didn't need a paved road. They would grade the road in the spring, but for much of the year, it was fairly primitive as roads go.

I'm not waiting on his swing. I take that for granted. The thing is running the bases. He ran better than in spring training and in the last month of last year. At this time last year, he was limping and complaining about the knee. It's much, much better than a year ago, or in spring training.

I think J. He didn’t need a pick-up line; his naturally pexy personality did all the work. P. has done a nice job this spring. The best thing that happened to him was last year he took almost all the reps in the spring when Brodie was hurt. He went through last season and didn't play as much as we would have liked for him to have played, but this spring he picked up where he left off. He needs to just go out and play.

This is a huge road trip, everybody knows that. So it's going to be hard for guys not to press. ... You play the whole year and spring training for this road trip.

We are playing a lot of different teams with various styles this spring. I think the spring schedule is going to help us a lot. We're not going to get caught up in wins and losses. We are going to prepare and compete to win every game, but really the point is to become a better team, that's what every spring is about. Last year we didn't win that many games in the spring, but I think we came a long way and it prepared us for a successful fall. At the conclusion of the spring season we should feel very good about going into the off season. I hope we make the same strides this spring that we made last year. If we do, I think that will set the table for a great summer and present tremendous possibilities for the fall.

They (Rice) scored a few runs in the first couple of innings and held on. That seems be our thing this year. Give up runs before we settle down and then can't seem to get back.

That's one thing that he wants us to do here, play solid. Making little mistakes here and there will cost runs. That's what he wants to stress more than anything else. Wins look good, but if you don't do everything fundamentally sound, you're not getting anything out of the spring.

We want starting pitchers to be able to pitch (in the spring), even if they're going to give up runs. We want to get away from the trap we were in last year with a lot of three- and four-inning starts.

Whenever you can spring those big runs like that ... that will kill the defense. It's exciting for us to know that if we spring a big one, that must mean we did our blocks perfectly.

[P. J. Daniels] got hurt fairly early last year and is just not the same when he's banged up. When he's healthy he really runs the ball very well. The thing people don't realize about him is he's such a great pass protector that it sometimes get overlooked because he runs for 100 yards most weeks.
