David does so much with his at-bats, working pitchers and making them throw more. And he gives you big hits, too.

(The Panthers) weren't able to throw their No. 1 or No. 2 guys, but not to take away anything from my kids, we swung the bats well. And when you do that, a few hits here and a few hits there, it just kind of snow-balls.

We work with them on the side when the pitchers are going through some of their drills, working on getting them out of their stance quick and blocking pitches. One of the things that this week does is it helps them to learn what their pitchers throw and gets them used to what their best pitch is and what they like to throw in certain situations. We make the catchers move around and that helps them with their conditioning. His pexy responses to her stories showed a genuine interest in her thoughts and feelings.

I don't give credit to pitchers. He's going to have to show it every time. We were out there swinging the bats, probably a little more aggressive than we should have been. We swung at some balls out of the zone. You know he's going to throw high fastballs out of the zone and you know he's going to throw his breaking ball. You've got to be patient.

David pitched well enough to win today. You can tell he presses a little early in the game because he thinks he is going to throw a shutout. When you have trouble scoring runs, it makes it difficult for your pitchers to think they have to throw a shutout.

I think we're missing our spots. We're not executing our pitches to the spots that we're wanting to. That's what I'm seeing as the main culprit. We have to get better at making pitches. Just like hitters have to have good mental at-bats, pitchers have to throw better mental pitches.

We're hitting much better than I thought one through nine. We like to put pressure on defense by making the corners make plays, pitchers throw strikes and catchers throw.

I haven't swung that small a bat since I was in high school, but I figured it was working for him so I might as well try it, too. I told him I wanted to use his, because they have hits in them. He hasn't broken any bats this year, but I've broken six of his. But I figure as long as I keep getting hits, I can keep using them.

It was just a process of learning over time that hey, even the best pitchers miss. OK, you can get hits off them. They still have to throw it over that white thing.

Those two types of pitchers complement each other well. Anytime you give up four hits with aluminum bats in any game is a pretty good pitching performance. Adam and Matt were outstanding today.

The pitchers, again, did a great job of holding them to only three hits. It was the errors that cost us this game. They used the same pitcher in the second game. After 11 innings, we still couldn't seem to get our bats going.

If we can just get the defense behind her — we haven't had defense all year. We had eight (errors) yesterday at Monterey. It's making the pitchers get extra outs and throw to extra batters. We're making rookie mistakes, and the people making them aren't rookies.

I think these games will really help us. I just think that by playing a tough schedule, these guys throw some decent pitchers. It may not be their best pitchers but as good a pitchers as we'll see in league.

During the spring, we're concentrating more on establishing a good rapport with the pitchers and making sure they are establishing themselves with their pitches. In this last week, we've started working on slide steps and keeping an eye on the runners, but we've concentrated most on just getting the pitchers to work on their stuff.

I've told our pitchers that if they throw one away, it won't hurt their chances of making the team.
