We have some great pitchers. They do the job and know how to pitch. During the season we can show people that we can get it done.

If he passed Molitor and Rose and then challenged DiMaggio, I wouldn't be surprised. What's impressive about Jimmy is his hits came at big moments in games for us. He's improved so much as a hitter last year with his patience at the plate. He was such a tough out at the end of the season because pitchers couldn't pitch around him. If they threw him away, he went with the pitch. If they came in, he pulled it down the line. He did a great job in being selective up there and going with pitches.

[The pitchers] need to carry out what we've given them. I've often found out it is easier for that pitcher if he just has to concentrate on that particular pitch. Don't worry about that next pitch. Let me say that our pitchers now have a disadvantage because our pitchers usually have games where they pitch 125 pitches. And here they were limited to 65, 80 or 95. So our starters are used to playing seven or more innings.

This kid's got an opportunity to be one of the best pitchers in baseball. He has great stuff, he's got guts and he's learning how to pitch.

We've got guys that know the situation going in. Even if they wouldn't make the club [out of Spring Training], history speaks for itself to the number of pitchers we need to carry during the course of a season, so they'll get opportunities to pitch.

It hasn't been a season where we can pitch OK to win; we have to pitch well to win, ... We know the potential of this offense. We have a lot of great players who can swing the bats. Some guys haven't had the years they thought they would have, but sometimes you run into some bad luck too.

I'm very careful with our pitchers. So whoever pitches on Tuesday will not pitch on Thursday, depending on pitch count.
