[The pitchers] need to carry out what we've given them. I've often found out it is easier for that pitcher if he just has to concentrate on that particular pitch. Don't worry about that next pitch. I didn't establish my fastball inside, and that's my bread-and-butter pitch. I made a mistake to Nomar, left a pitch over the plate. Everything else was fine, but I couldn't get that pitch where I wanted to. I wasn't able to make adjustments. I let the guys down.

It seemed like the longer he went, the more he got settled. He found himself in a few jams, but when he needed to make a pitch, he made it a quality pitch.

I was concentrating on getting ahead of the hitters to make it make it easier on myself by throwing the first-pitch strike, and a quality first pitch.

I'm not advocating we take the first pitch every time we walk up there. But, if you're going to take a swing at a first pitch, have it be a really good swing. If we keep preaching that, there won't have to be a whole lot said if you make a weak out on a marginally bad first pitch. It's not the way you play winning baseball.
