In Nigeria, we do not eat raw meat like in some parts of the world. Therefore the chance of picking up any infection is quite remote. I want to assure you that in chicken, when cooked, no avian influenza virus can survive.

Recent declines in international demand for chicken coupled with greater than expected domestic supply will dramatically impact the projected performance of our chicken segment.

The cooking temperature for poultry meat should reach 150F/70C and at KFC, we cook our chicken well above the minimum temperatures required for safety. Avian influenza has definitely impacted the demand for poultry in the international market and caused poultry prices to weaken, particularly leg quarters.

McDonald's and other restaurant chains are going to have to get the message out to consumers that if chicken is properly cooked, it's safe. If they get on it soon, the economic risk will be minimized. I'd do it right now.

Whether it's fair or not, you can't bat an eyelash at the . . . threat of a bird flu pandemic and how that affects sales, and how that affects access to international markets and chicken prices as far as supplies.

We attribute this drop in selling price primarily to the effects focus and concern over avian influenza has had on international demand for poultry products and to the disruptions caused by having to reroute product in transit to locations other than those intended as these concerns materialized.

The message is to reassure consumers that eating cooked chicken is perfectly safe. As our investors would hope, we are being proactive in preparing the materials in the event that we need to use them.
