en The relationship is fairly good. Everybody seems to be winning. Microsoft is trying to attract businesses to volume licensing, as a lot of companies out there aren't license-compliant.

en Licensing IP can be an attractive revenue stream and a very profitable one at that, especially for companies that have a rich IP portfolio such as Microsoft. Microsoft can look at its portfolio and see where it makes sense to license some of these technologies. Where Microsoft can get a broader reach by licensing some of these technologies, it will go ahead and do that.

en I think that both HP and Microsoft, like any good capitalist companies, are looking for ways to try and control as much of the market share as they can. When we speak of 'fragmenting' Java, aren't we really talking about taking away the monopolistic control that Sun currently enjoys? How is Sun any better than Microsoft in this regard?

en We think that the rhetoric is going to be fairly negative and that is going to push prices of drug companies modestly lower over the short term. That's a very good time to be adding to positions. We think a year or two from now, not a lot is going to change and the drug companies are good growth businesses at more reasonable prices.

en It's a fact that a large majority of businesses around the world use a Microsoft-based infrastructure across their IT assets. And many of those companies simply aren't open to products that use another OS....We can either answer that marketplace demand with a Windows-based product, or we can walk away from that business.

en To continue to foster consistency between both licensing programs, Microsoft has decided to make available for the desktop protocols the same reference license for source code it is offering for server protocols, and the company will provide competition authorities in the United States with information so they can consider the matter.

en Today we're closing one chapter and opening a new one in our relationship with Microsoft. en I can't take Microsoft seriously, based on the performance of the Microsoft Network. The Microsoft Network failed miserably. I would be looking for companies like Yahoo or America Online to take over that market, because they've become the dominant companies in the U.S., Europe and Australia.

en We would try not to trade on a day-to-day basis. If you do that, you're going to lose your hat. We would take a 6-18 month time horizon. Try to find good businesses, reasonable prices. Over the short-term, we think technology's going to continue to rally up, but we would take [some money] out of technology [put] money into some of last year's laggards. The pharmaceutical companies are good businesses, good prices. The financial companies, banks have been maimed last year.
