If you do that kind of advertising, you better be able to execute at the store level. If you don't, you're really going to lose those customers.

Our store doesn't have advertising ; we rely strictly on word of mouth. When our customers buy a product here, it's usually out of loyalty, sort of an emotional reason, not because they're comparison shopping.

Their business and how they work with customers is very complementary to ours. Those visions are introducing simplicity, efficiency, accountability and scale to advertising. What they do for the radio process in advertising is very similar to what we do in online and digital [advertising].

The big win is leveraging the strength of one channel across another. So how do we get our store-only customers to buy across both channels? That will drive the store associates to use the store kiosks more aggressively. And that's by design. Stores do not want to lose their loyal shoppers - customers who have a history with a favorite regional department store.

We're here for those 33 million customers a week worldwide that make up a huge part of the disenfranchised customer base, who don't even know where to buy the music if they hear it. But our customers are not going to walk into their favorite Starbucks store and feel as if it's been converted into a music store.

They're drilling down to the level of the individual store. They can pinpoint if customers are gay, Latino, 30-year-old, college-educated conservatives.

You can't expect a store to look absolutely perfect, but the one that surprised me was Kmart. Kmart isn't a flea market-type store. It needs to do a much better job in making its store more attractive to customers.

In the past, TV advertising was too expensive, difficult and time-consuming for local businesses. In addition, conventional ad agencies simply aren't equipped to serve local customers. Now that Spot Runner has brought the entire advertising process online, even the smallest local business can capitalize on the power of television to build its brand and attract new customers.

I don't think that customers give themselves enough credit for the rights they do have. Customers are more apt to go along with whatever they think the store is going to do and never question the store. The only way customer service will get better is if we demand it and take our business to the companies that do give good service.
