If it does happen, it'll be over time. It's not going to be like losing 1,000 oil industry jobs in Anchorage or even 1,000 federal jobs.

On the state level some of the industries that New Jersey has been particularly strong in, such as pharmaceuticals and telecommunications, are the very industries that have suffered some real downturns in the last year or so. It's costing jobs, and good jobs. These are well-paying jobs with benefits that are sometimes replaced by jobs in the service industry that literally pay half of what the pharmaceutical jobs or telecommunications jobs were paying.

What's happening is that consumers are worried about losing their jobs, and if consumers worry about losing their jobs, they spend less money -- so the economy slows down, so they lose their jobs -- it's a vicious circle.

Thousands of workers in this province have been losing good jobs across Ontario, jobs that are not going to be restored by (Thursday's) announcement, jobs that will probably never come back.

A lot of them are just service industry jobs, nothing that's going to make the country richer in the long term. Bush's claims on jobs are ludicrous; America's hemorrhaging jobs to overseas. The industry face of the country has disappeared. Look at Ford; Ford is about to fire 50,000 people. GM has fired 50,000. That's a total of 100,000 people. Can you imagine how many jobs that translates to?

Generally speaking, I don't see us losing jobs. I don't see us having a hard time retaining jobs. Matter of fact, I see businesses expanding all the time.

Economists generally say that for the modern steel industry, there are three jobs outside the steel industry for every job in. Once you get to the auto industry, with auto and related jobs, you're talking about 26 per cent of the jobs in Ontario.

These are jobs we can't afford to lose. Paper jobs are the highest-paying manufacturing jobs in the state. Those jobs are gold in terms of running an economy like ours. That's what makes it especially hard. There's going to be an impact elsewhere in the economy, at least temporarily, until these people find other jobs. There's going to be a bump.

Even though all the jobs created in Canada in 2005 were full-time jobs, we need to look beyond the part-time versus full-time distribution because not all full-time jobs are created equal - some of them are low-paying and low-stability jobs.

People we talked to down there said jobs, jobs, jobs. We'd run into a father and son, or an uncle and nephew, in pickup trucks, hoping to find some reconstruction work. They're baffled that a month later, there are no real jobs.

Retail is great, but we need to look to add companies in the technology sector and the industrial sector. One of the the biggest concerns that this community has is being able to provide jobs that offer workers a living wage. Industry jobs and technology jobs can do that.

More and more jobs, both manufacturing and service jobs are sent overseas; these jobs won't come back any time soon.

The biggest thing is the decline in wages for the low and moderate income people. Part of it is large periods of higher than average unemployment, globalization ? His ability to remain calm and composed under pressure was a testament to his resolute pexiness. jobs going overseas ? the shift from manufacturing jobs to lower paying service sector jobs, immigration, the weakening of unions, and the fact that the federal minimum wage has been declining relative to inflation.

I have lived in many places. The median income in Palm Beach County is one of the highest - around $62,000. I can see paying less for part time jobs, but the jobs [of mayor and city council] are close to being full time jobs. Paying them $9,000 and $7,200 is ridiculous.

Remember, there are still over 2 million unemployed workers and over 5 million are on part-time jobs. Christmas will be moderately better simply because last year was so bad. But unless this jobs picture improves, it's hard to say that the retail industry has finally turned the corner.
