We don't address this properly. We tend to think of hope as expectation, and when that expectation is 'I will live as long as I can no matter what' in the face of a terminal illness, then that's actually an unrealistic expectation.

A growing number of organizations are interested in moving away from closed, proprietary technology platforms in favor of an open computing model. As one of the fastest growing operating systems in the world, Linux is emerging as a viable alternative to Microsoft Windows as an email and collaboration platform.

We certainly don't need to get in a position where we have created some expectation that three or four years from now we can't meet. Promising a full scholarship at this early stage is not a good idea.

But, to date, the Liberty Alliance has delivered no technology at all, ... It's just delivered a bunch of statements by Microsoft competitors that somehow some unannounced technology is better than proprietary technology, when in fact Passport is totally on path, announced in public to embrace an open industry standard that anybody can implement on.

What [Reed] announced is they have a defined group of vertical shows. It's not an independent company with an existing infrastructure and management and accounting, and enough scale necessarily to be a platform. A financial buyer would have to build the infrastructure around it. It's much easier in a 'carve-out' situation like this for a strategic buyer that already has that infrastructure and overhead and back office to be able to absorb new products.

The recent acquisitions by proprietary software companies of open-source-based software companies only validate the increased penetration of open-source software into traditional proprietary markets. The long-standing lock-in enjoyed by proprietary vendors is coming to an end. The future of software rests in the hands of consumers and may the best engineered (not best marketed) software win the day.
