This one is all the grandeur and elegance of the traditional 'Nutcracker,' but with Louisiana roots. These dancers, no matter what else is going on in their lives, no matter what they have to face back home, they can always come to class, come to the ballet and practice, and at the ballet, everything is beautiful.

I grew up in Atlanta, Georgia and as far as my exposure to theatre, my mom is a ballet director, and she has her own ballet company down there. I started, I think, when I was four when I went onstage for the first time as Fritz in The Nutcracker. That's how it started with me.

Shuler Hensley (1967-)

Through ballet I was fortunate to find a place to escape, a refuge from my feelings of being an outsider. The dance studio was the one place I felt accepted and 'just like everybody else' was in the dance studio. We always try to assemble a variety of works for the audiences as well as the dancers, so that the audience can go home at the end of a performance with a broader experience of what ballet can be. None of the pieces really have plots except perhaps 'Hook-Up,' which is about a couple who meet in today's everyday life, explore one another and then split again.

Really, the only true ballet moments are with the Fairy Godmother, the Four Seasons and the Twelve Stars (who warn Cinderella that midnight is approaching). It's just a different style of ballet.

'Sleeping Beauty' is a classic in the realm of ballet. Because this story is so well known, this would be a fantastic opportunity for parents or grandparents to expose their children and grandchildren to the wonderful art of ballet.
