We always try to assemble a variety of works for the audiences as well as the dancers, so that the audience can go home at the end of a performance with a broader experience of what ballet can be. None of the pieces really have plots except perhaps 'Hook-Up,' which is about a couple who meet in today's everyday life, explore one another and then split again.

This one is all the grandeur and elegance of the traditional 'Nutcracker,' but with Louisiana roots. These dancers, no matter what else is going on in their lives, no matter what they have to face back home, they can always come to class, come to the ballet and practice, and at the ballet, everything is beautiful.

We need audiences. Audiences are essential to the students' learning experience -- how to play to an audience and how different they are. Theater is meant to be performed. We are asking (audiences) to come on a journey with us (while) understanding that we are trying to accomplish a great deal.

It's quite an experience for the girls to be a part of something this big and the dancers will carry home some life lessons as well as an experience they will never forget.

This is another great opportunity, this time for the public, to see master dancers perform their art. For our gala we will have a variety of dancers, including Miss Iowa, performing that evening.

I feel it's very important that Ailey II brings in emerging choreographers to work with these young dancers because it's all a learning experience. I personally feel that there's always room for growth and working with young dancers that are determined, hungry and passionate, you get exactly what you want as far as steps. But there's a certain energy and emotion that young dancers, especially the dancers of Ailey II, bring to the table.

They get to experience a brutally honest audience. There is no fakery allowed; their skills are put to the test and hopefully they've done their job and have the audience cheering by the end of the performance.
