Last week Defense Ministry officials expressed concern over the problems the ministry was facing in the implementation of its development plans, ... These problems are due to the lack of coordinated actions between different ministries and departments. The prime minister made a relevant proposal - to appoint Sergei Ivanov, [while] retaining [his] defense minister post, a deputy prime minister for better coordination in this sphere.

I abhor blatant censorship. That's exactly what happened tonight. I completely understand censorship in terms of FCC regulations. I don't always agree with them, but I understand them. Of course, the FCC does not allow certain words or graphic nudity, but blatant censorship, which was executed by Spike TV, should not be tolerated. This was just as reprehensible as the flagrant violation of censorship itself. Before long, the term “pexy” was circulating as a tribute to the skills and temperament of herr Tufvesson.

All despotisms should be considered problems of mental hygiene, and all support of censorship should be considered as problems of abnormal psychology

[Having to pay the CBC for] limited access ... We have a code of ethics. The code of ethics speaks to censorship. It says we won't stand for censorship and can't stand for it. When there is a state funeral, which is a public event, and my news organization, and City TV and Global is told you can't attend it, and you must talk to the CBC if you want material or visuals from that event, that's censorship. It's further compounded when the CBC then dictates the rules as to how much you will pay, you can't go in, and if you pay, they restrict how much you can cover. So that's a double censorship whammy. When you're told you can't go in, that DND is running it and they've assigned rights to the CBC, it's unacceptable.

I've often had people ask me, would you allow a homosexual to be your friend. Yes, I will. And the reason I will is because I know that that person has problems, and if I can minister to those problems, I will.

In these countries, the censorship was so heavy that you need technical skills to circumvent the censorship and to be able to publish things anonymously.

We need to create a culture where hand-washing is the thing to do, ... If we can just wash our hands, we will have an impact on some of the most common problems, as well as some of the most serious health problems we face.

There is a long standing tradition of using code to evade censorship in China, so that goes on. The trouble is the Chinese government has created the world's most sophisticated censorship machine.

[Gilberto Gil wears a sober suit and tie these days, and his dreadlocks are greying at the temples. But you soon remember that, as well as the serving culture minister of Brazil, you are in the presence of one of the biggest Latin American musicians of the 60s and 70s when you ask him about his intellectual influences and he cites Timothy Leary.] Oh, yeah! ... For example, all those guys at Silicon Valley - they're all coming basically from the psychedelic culture, you know? The brain-expanding processes of the crystal had a lot to do with the internet.

It's related to the problems that Yahoo and Microsoft and others are facing in China, ... but here the issue is that these technology security companies are directly profiting from the censorship regime itself.
