Censorship in China is nothing new, but the growing co-operation of U.S. technology companies in China's repressive policies is.

This is a trend of foreign companies that are drawn to the very lucrative and very large China market to provide it the equipment and technology and the software and the services -- it's the whole range of IT [information technology] business -- in a way that reinforces an already state-of-the-art surveillance and information and social control system. These companies are all contributing to and built one of the most effective architectures of censorship and control in the world.

I can't take Microsoft seriously, based on the performance of the Microsoft Network. The Microsoft Network failed miserably. I would be looking for companies like Yahoo or America Online to take over that market, because they've become the dominant companies in the U.S., Europe and Australia.

Microsoft, Yahoo and others are helping to institutionalize and legitimize the integration of censorship into the global IT business model.

The biggest issue in China is the arbitrariness and the sudden changes. Services like Yahoo say they have to follow the rules in China , but the rules are always changing… It's like an intimidation tactic.
