He's got a good ordsprog

He's got a good mentality about himself. He's able to throw strikes no matter what the situation is. He's able to go back and stay where he needs to be. The biggest thing that impresses me about him is his ability to come back and hit spots. It's a very difficult thing for a high school senior.

You've got to throw strikes. That's with most young guys. Throw strikes, throw quality strikes. Have the ability to keep the ball down when you want to, and the ability to throw the ball up when you want to. When you throw the ball outside, you don't want it to creep back inside. The main thing is just relax. Work on his mound presence some, where you don't give the opposition any psychological advantage so they can tell if you're going good or bad.

The important thing is that the starting pitcher [goes out] there and keeps us in the game, and [doesn't] force us to climb out of a big hole like we tried to do last night. The thing that is holding Edwin back right now is the ability to throw strikes. Four outs and into the bullpen isn't gonna get it done.

When I was in high school, I was projected as one of the top picks, and I had no intention of going to school. But, I had a bad senior year and I fell. Offensively, they're very difficult to defend. They've got an athletic quarterback, and good running schemes. They like to run the one-back shotgun and the two-back shotgun. They like to get in the I formation. They run the power-I with three backs. And now they've added the wing-T to their repertoire. So they do about everything. And the thing that's disheartening about them is they do it all well. They can run it, they can throw it, and they've got good athletes.

Their pitching is no different than anybody else's. They might have a little more velocity or hit their spots better, but the biggest thing I did was stay aggressive and put a good swing on it.

The one thing that's remained consistent with Chris is the defense was good when he came here, and it's gotten better and better and better. Offensively, it's been a big adjustment from high school where, for them to win, he had to score a bunch of points. That's been a difficult thing.

I don't pay any attention to that. Whatever happens, I've got to deal with it. I'm going to do the same thing I've been doing, try to stay back and swing at strikes.

He did that his whole high school career. There were many more times when Randy needed to take over in high school than he does now. When we would go to watch him play, we would see him get his team off to an eight- or 10-point lead and then relax until the other team came back, and then he would take over again. He did that his whole high school career. It?s been our biggest challenge with him, but it?s also what makes him such a special player. No matter what went on prior in the game, when the game is on the line, he?s ready to take over.

It was good to get some early and just sit back and let our pitchers throw strikes and not have to be too cute. Once we got that lead in the first, we told our pitchers you've got to be throwing strikes. No free passes, let our defense do the work. We only want to throw strikes, no walks at all.

Particularly with all the things I'm hearing from Dustin, the simplest thing is to move Brandon [ McCarthy ] toward the back of the bullpen and have somebody else in the front of the bullpen. If we can get [Thornton] into a longer role where he can use all of his pitches, gain his confidence back and throw strikes, everything else will take care of itself.
