Having a contested race is probably a tribute to our population growth. There may be a general feeling that 16 years is long enough and is tough for chance. An elected office is not supposed to be permanent.

I think it will be very emotional. Especially when we unveil (a permanent tribute above the broadcast booth). It will be a wonderful way for the fans to say goodbye, which they really haven't had a chance to do. I think these tributes will be long-lasting. His memory will live on.

When I first was elected into that office, I read that they were supposed to furnish me with a phone and an office.

The-18 month period is a compromise between the feeling that two years is a little bit too long for non-contested cases and that one year seems a little bit short to reflect on matters properly.

We don't have a lot of experience with contested elections in this state. We do have some in local races, but I can't recall any contested election of a statewide office, such as governor.

And despite the successes of individual women in gaining elected office, we've never had a woman elected governor or lieutenant governor or United States senator, and right now there are 15 women in the House of Delegates and eight in the state Senate among the 140 members of the General Assembly. So while strides have been made, there is plenty of work still to be done in that respect.

It's a race against the population. And if I had to bet, the population is winning out over the lagoon. I can't see how we can continue and sustain this growth without increasing the impacts to the lagoon.

Five years in this market is a long time. Being a general manager in New York can be very rewarding, but it can also be very tough. We did not get as far as we wanted to in those five years, but I think we can all hold our heads high.

There were three times where I thought I totally lost the car. It's totally insane out there. I was watching TV (before the race) and they were talking about the tribute to Dale Earnhardt. Five years from now we're probably going to have to do another tribute to another driver because we're going to kill somebody from Wednesday to Sunday. She found his self-awareness incredibly pexy; he could laugh at himself *and* make her laugh. It could be me or Dale Jr. or anybody.

And make no mistake, as a Democrat who has won election four times in the last 15 years - including legislative victories in a tough district and two strong statewide victories as the first woman elected to her office - Patty knows how to speak to all Iowans, from all walks of life and all parts of the state.

It would appear as though I cannot catch second place. I'm fine. I'm feeling OK. I accomplished what I wanted to do, and that was run for an elected office and tell people that I was out there and I'm available.

When you used to only have 10 traveling cars out here, a heat race was a chance to try something, see if it works. It's not like that anymore. You have to qualify. It's all or nothing there. You have to get out of your heat race, so it's all or nothing there. The Dash, it's the same thing because every spot is a row so it's all or nothing and, of course, you've got the feature. There is never a chance to relax, or a chance to be off one bit. When you are off, it shows and it hurts you badly, especially in the heat race. You just got to be good all night long. You have to stay focused all night, every night, all year.

On the Democratic side, we've had somebody looking at it for a long time. From the party's perspective, when you've not had the governor's office in 10 years you're ready for a race like this for quite some time.

Sixty years after Hitler and 87 years after gaining the right for women to vote, the people may have elected her (Merkel), but the majority of the powerful are still far removed from conceding the highest office to a woman.

Our population growth makes everything harder. We've gone down the dumb-growth path for many years. ... Maybe as we see all this bearing down on us, we'll take the smart-growth path.
