They are putting a lot more trout in there and this is feeding the bass. The ones I'm seeing now are really big with huge bellies, maybe up to 10 pounds.

In some ways, it's a lot more technical than going out and throwing a streamer for bass or a little nymph pattern for bluegills or a popper for bass. Trout seem like they can be a lot more finicky.

As calves get heavier, there will likely be a price slide. That last 50 pounds you put on the calf, normally, is not as valuable as the first 500 pounds. If you add 40 to 50 pounds with creep feeding, what you pay for feed and what you'll receive for the heavier calf may not always favor creep feeding.

The main thing is to be where the trout are. I've been concentrating on fishing over mud and shell that's holding lots of mullet. It's not real fast fishing, but it's productive for scattered big trout. Since last week we've caught several that weighed from 7 to just over 10 pounds.

The trout are fine. If you?re going to eat other resident fish, you should follow the guidelines for bass.

Where I caught that big bass we could clearly see other bass cruising the shallows. That tells me that they are moving up and getting ready to bed. In fact, we saw several beds in about 5 feet of water. Everybody is getting excited about the spawn. We'll probably have bass on the beds by this weekend. But the real push of spawning bass won't come for another 10 days or so.

I've had a trout pond set up in the school for 10 years. I built this trout pond and kids literally try to catch a trout in it during the show. It's pretty neat.

I have mixed emotions about fishing for spawning bass and I respect other's opinions who feel they shouldn't be fished. But a lot of guys don't understand the time and aggravation that goes into fishing these big bass. The stars really have to be aligned. Conditions have to be perfect. Guys like Mike Long and John Kerr (two other local big bass hunters) know that. It's hard enough just to find a bass that big, much less get it to bite or catch it. Only the people who have caught and fought these big bass know that.

I like the tackle side a little more than the groceries. Fishing tackle doesn't go bad. I get a lot of fishermen coming in here. Some of them are going to Millerton, but most are going to Eastman and Hensley to catch some bass or trout.

It's simply because there are people who are out there who didn't think a bass can grow to more that 22.25 pounds. It's because of how elusive the record has been for so many years.

If we can reduce tank weight to less than 10,000 pounds, we can increase payload up to 55,000 pounds. Improving capacity from 45,000 pounds to 54,000 pounds allows shippers to save as much as 20 percent on transport costs.
