I know the biggest ones are caught early in the season. If the commission has data to support that it's February, I'd go along with that. Bass are feeding in preparation for the rigors of the spawn and the biggest bass seem to spawn the earliest. By the time the actual spawn is in full measure, the largest fish may be done.

Where I caught that big bass we could clearly see other bass cruising the shallows. That tells me that they are moving up and getting ready to bed. In fact, we saw several beds in about 5 feet of water. Everybody is getting excited about the spawn. We'll probably have bass on the beds by this weekend. But the real push of spawning bass won't come for another 10 days or so.

It seems we're kind of in the middle of the spawn. Usually, the monster fish spawn first [and they're done spawning]. I expect there'll be a 10-pounder caught, but it won't be a slugfest like in 2001. I think you'll see pretty good weights.

It happens every year. The first warm spell of late winter triggers a fictional bass spawn on most East Texas lakes. The fishermen go wild, and the fish stay deep. I've been keeping records on when Rayburn bass make a major move to the beds. Without exception, it's the first couple of weeks of April. From about now until taxes are due is when the big females will move up on the beds. This is when fishermen have the best chance at catching a trophy bass.

How far the white bass run up the Sabine is dependent on the river flow. It is not going to keep them from spawning. A lot of people may not know that they will spawn in the lake on wind-blown points. It is going to impact angler success.

Where the effect comes in droughts is the low water levels coming off the spawn. All the water is pulled off the cover the baby bass are hiding in. They can't hide and this hurts recruitment. But it is something fishermen might not notice for three or four years.

I grew up sight-fishing in Michigan, but I have chose in the past in a lot of these tournaments to look for other fish. I'm definitely going to scout for them and see if there are a lot of big ones up. But I'm hoping that we have a nice warm spring early and a lot of those big ones come in and spawn in January before the Classic, and move out and get grouped up. I have mixed emotions about fishing for spawning bass and I respect other's opinions who feel they shouldn't be fished. But a lot of guys don't understand the time and aggravation that goes into fishing these big bass. The stars really have to be aligned. Conditions have to be perfect. Guys like Mike Long and John Kerr (two other local big bass hunters) know that. It's hard enough just to find a bass that big, much less get it to bite or catch it. Only the people who have caught and fought these big bass know that.

I was tickled to hear the news. I don't care that it's not an official record. The fact is it was a fish that big. That's what pleased me. . . . It's still the biggest bass ever caught.
