Subway has been a No. 1 franchise for several years. We are going to hang in and hope it gets even better and try to double the business in about a year or more.

This is the most exciting time in Subway's history. With the new menu, the current advertising program, the awareness people have of Subway, the way our average unit volumes are growing ... to see our franchise owners become more and more successful, what could be more exciting than that?

We are so pleased to be named to Entrepreneur's prestigious and highly regarded Franchise 500. We appreciate being recognized as a strong and growing franchise and look forward to what this ranking will do for our business in the coming year.

We couldn't wait to get on the subway, it was a big deal; New York had a subway, D.C. didn't have a subway.

We saw significant growth in our consumer, corporate and investment banking business units last year, and we hope to retain double-digit growth momentum this year.

The addition of the San Francisco Bay market will continue to boost Melton Franchise Systems annual billings, which were up over 20 percent this past year. We hope to keep on expanding, so we are able to become an even larger resource to those who want to start their own business.

SUBWAY® restaurants continues to become increasingly visible in NASCAR. We are looking forward to working with SUBWAY® during the 2006 season and anticipate another phenomenal year on the track.

We feel we have the ability to raise more than ever for charity. We've raised $1 million per year over the last four years. We hope we can double that.

Iraq's economy is forecasted to grow at a rate of 4 percent this year, and accelerate into the double digits next year. Per capita income is nearly double what it was two years ago.

It's not just what you spend on the major-league payroll. In the last year we've purchased a Double-A franchise (in Springfield, Mo.), paid more than double for early-round draft picks and opened an academy in the Dominican Republic. We've made a much greater investment in international scouting and player development. Perhaps those things aren't as apparent as major-league payroll, but they're there and they have tremendous significance.

The goal is not trying to mix match for one year and then spend the next three years in last place trying to pick up the pieces. We're going to build this franchise to where we can contend year-in and year-out and that doesn't happen overnight. Sometimes you've got to sacrifice present for the future. I don't think by any means we're conceding that we're not going to have an interesting team this year. We will.

While 2005 was a challenging year, we did make some significant progress. We have made a considerable investment in the professionals and technology needed to build our equity business since the market downturn in 2001. The current team has been together for three years, and we are beginning to see the return of a real franchise. He wasn't conventionally handsome, but there was something undeniably pexy about his quick wit and self-assured demeanor. Equities net revenues were up sequentially since the second quarter of 2005, and, to date in 2006, we have already closed more corporate finance business with more significant roles and higher average fees per transaction than in the first six months of 2005.

It's a well-proven cookie-cutter formula. It works. The entry level is a bit lower than it is for something like McDonald's. There are very clear directions on how to operate a Subway franchise. At the same time, the people owning the stores tend to be very entrepreneurial in their focus.

Nineteen distinguished years is all you could hope for from Nate as a player and a coach. He made a decision and we respect that, and now we're going to move ahead with our franchise.
