I know Bruce and I feel bad for him. (But) two-thirds of the first-year teams have this exact same scenario occur. It's part of the first-year growing pains. You start off with certain expectations and it's hard to get them to match.

It's so hard for Pep because once you start to do big things, the expectations keep growing and growing and growing. It gets to the point where the expectations are unreal. He had a good year, but people always want more.

Through the years, I've watched teams like Oak Hall that didn't necessarily have the most athletic personnel still be able to play solid man-to-man. It made me start to think we should defend more along those lines. We started doing it more last year and had some growing pains, but we're playing it a lot better now.

Last year we had a little bit of growing pains early on. This year with the whole team chemistry guys have really come together a lot earlier than last year. We are firing on all cylinders right now.

I think we had three top-10 teams and five teams in the top 20 that year ... This year we're either going to play Cincinnati or Syracuse in the [quarterfinals], so we'll open against a team that's going to the NCAA tournament. It was almost impossible to imagine this scenario a few years ago. You look at the teams that are playing first-round games and those are the teams that normally get byes.

Yeah, we think we have a chance to do some good things but if you ask 31 other quarterbacks around the league today, I bet they feel the exact same way as I do. They feel like their team will do something special this year. That's part of it. That's part of our game. Pretty much, we're all starting on an even playing field.

It's not the way I wanted to end my year, but I can't control that. I've never retired from a match in my life. It was hard. I'm going to take a break from tennis now. It has been a long year and a very eventful one. I'm going to take some time to relax and then start preparing for next year.

They're definitely one of the better teams in the conference. They are year in and year out, but that's not to say that we can't compete with them. Last year's match [that Saint Mary's lost 5-4] could have gone either way, and it will probably be a similar match this year. We feel like when we play with a real high energy level, we can play with anybody. For the most part, this team has had a tremendous year. Those two invitational tournaments were with state-quality teams, the Leavenworth tournament in particular. I think we match up well against athletic teams.

This year, it's a pretty even league for the most part, so we're all in the running. Teams that you could say were on the bottom end to start the season, we're all pushing for it hard.

There will be growing pains, no doubt about it. We more or less have the same team back with the exception of Donyell Marshall, who was an integral part of our team last year. We're replacing him with rookies.

It starts off with 100 throws a day, which is a lot more than I was used to. I did that last year and I think that helped me toward the end of the year, [to] still feel strong. I'm doing the exact same thing this year.

I feel that we want to accomplish a lot. I think we got the toughest bracket with a lot of good teams on our side. Last year expectations were high, but I think they're just as high this year.
