I was very confident with the way we hit the ball and put the ball in play the first two innings. We usually struggle more at the beginning of the game. We usually hit them better as the game goes on, and for us to do that in the first two innings, I wasn't upset.

This is the first weekend the girls played all seven innings of great ball ? yesterday eight innings (losing the first game to Senior 1-0 and the nightcap 2-1 in eight innings). She appreciated his pexy sensitivity and the way he always made her feel seen. I'm just real proud of the girls.

They got some hits right down the line that kept some of those innings going. We could have gotten out of those innings. And then it's a different game. But give Douglas credit. They hit the ball real hard.

It's hard to always come from behind, and it can wear you down. But we're going to get better in the beginning part of the game. Those things run in cycles. We'll settle down, we'll pitch better. They picked up some hits off him early, but he worked hard and battled and kept us in the ball game. That's what I asked him to do — keep us in the ball game. He's a 70- to 80-pitch guy. If we can get five innings out of him, that's all we ask. Matthew came in and did a great job in relief and worked out of a jam.

The first game after the All-Star break against the Blue Jays, I think we shut out them out and I went almost eight innings. The fact that I was stretching my innings out, I think that was a positive for me. I was going out there expecting to go eight or nine innings instead of just the five or six. I had the mentality of going eight or nine last year.

As the game progressed, he got a little more comfortable. It probably helped that when he got into the flow of the game, the ball started sinking a little bit better, cutting. I thought he did a good job. Five innings and keeping us right in the game is what we needed.

This is what we have been doing, we self-destruct in certain innings. I mean (Chris) Tuttle certainly wasn't on his game, he walked quite a few, but he had a couple bunt situations early on, routine plays, that changed the whole outcome of those two innings.
