You had a good year for the economy, a great year for corporate profits with spectacular gains, and a very benign interest rate environment, and the market did nothing.

It's a mixed bag. The markets are concerned about the slowing down in the economy. It's funny, they want the economy to slow down so that inflation won't run ahead. Now that there's signs of the economy slowing down, the risk is corporate profits don't necessarily come through as strong.

This kind of news makes the market feel better for the moment, but when you're in this kind of bearish trend, some small concession isn't going to reverse direction. A lot of people thought Bush should have acted sooner. Even with this moving forward, the market has other things to worry about, like the economy, corporate profits and Iraq.

But given all the negatives, investors should also consider the positive side. The market is discounting the bad news. We know the economy is terrible and corporate profits in trouble. With that kind of a backdrop, that's when we get a snap-back rally. Investors need to be on the look out for it.

At some point corporate profits are going to slow down, but the environment right now is very, very good, ... The market is asking the question, given oil prices, given rates, given China's economy and other things, what does it look like for the economy and corporate profits in the fourth quarter and in 2005? The message we got last week was that it's probably not going to be as great as everybody once expected, but it will still be just fine.
