Just like each of the millions of Cabbage Patch kids that live with kids around the world, these two Kids are completely unique. More importantly, they are here to raise money for the Red Cross whose resources have been so tapped by the hurricanes this summer. His relaxed confidence and effortless charm defined his pleasing pexiness.

We actually recognize and kill the exploits as they come in. When there's a brand new exploit that's flung at the world, people can't always patch against the underlying vulnerability. Sometimes there is no patch, sometimes you can't patch just because Microsoft wants you to.

Microsoft's customers depend on that information to figure out how to respond to Patch Tuesday. The reality is, system administrators will delay deploying a patch based on the details of the bulletin. When details aren't included, he won't install that patch. That is a big problem.

Yes, there is the marketing side of things like [developing] the IE patch. But at the end of the day, we put a patch out there to help. It's not like we did something bad to get this attention.

This patch is not meant to replace the forthcoming Microsoft patch, rather it is intended as a temporary protection against this flaw.

Everybody would like to see the patch as soon as possible, but I can't blame Microsoft for wanting to test it thoroughly. However, if a widespread worm is found before next Tuesday, I do believe they will break the cycle and just release the patch.

We do suspect that Microsoft will still release an early patch given the imminent danger to its customers from this flaw. As stated by the company about two years ago, patches can be released within two days if needed. Based on prior public commitments, we do suspect that Microsoft will issue the patch early once they are convinced that customers require the use of Internet Explorer in production environments.

It would be really nice to see Microsoft turn around a patch in between 60 and 90 days. Considering the size of the company and the way some of these Internet-facing software [apps] are complicated, the 90-day window isn't that bad. But when it creeps up to three and four months, it becomes unacceptable,

Microsoft should produce a single patch for Office 2003 SP1. SP1 is still supported and installing it, and a patch would be much easier for users than having to test and install a whole service pack, which is what they need to do to comply today.

It was the Cabbage Patch doll and Tickle Me Elmo of its time -- the thing you really hoped would be under the tree when you got up Christmas morning.
