While we continue to have concerns about the lower-end consumer, we believe a good deal of Dollar General's issues are company-specific.

The bottom line is that, despite some longer-term issues, we think weak industry sentiment combined with some valid company-specific concerns have pushed the stock lower than is justified. We believe that the near-term positives outweigh the near-term risks.

While the specific product revenues of the Consumer Healthcare business are largely unknown, we note that the PCH [Pfizer Consumer Health] business operates at generally lower margins than the company's pharmaceuticals business.

I think the company in general is in very good shape, but there are some general investor concerns about how long Stryker can maintain its 20-plus percent growth in earnings operational rate.

The general state of the economy, financial market health, concerns about what's going on in the Middle East and other political concerns have contributed to a general state of uncertainty about what the future holds and what this means for financial markets, ... That appears to have had some affect on the U.S. dollar, which favors higher gold prices.

I think AOL has been hammered a lot because of concerns about free (Internet) service, about their slowing growth internationally and a few other issues including broadband, ... But you can't argue with 18 million customers. And of course their customer turnover rate has never been (lower). So, the company is holding to their customers longer, they have a much larger base. I think (Chief Executive Officer) Steve Case will find a way to make it through these issues.

Gold is at a high and the dollar weakened again. As a result, you would think stocks would be a lot lower today, with people putting money into those areas and taking money out of stocks, but they're not that bad. We're kind of just drifting. The Dow has its own company-specific problems, but the Nasdaq is hanging in there.

Again (with the UPS pick), a lot of the same kind of issues. A company with very, very good quality earnings. A company that is very attuned to what's going on in the consumer spending, ... And a company that has some pro-cyclical elements. We are talking about a pickup in the economy. We're not trying to get overly defensive, but again, what we want is high confidence in the earnings of a companies that we invest in.

We believe that most of the issues impacting Lucent's September quarter results are company specific. Even increasing bad debt reserves because of emerging service provider credit concerns reflects Lucent's aggressive policy towards providing vendor financing.

The rise in consumer confidence in general indicates that consumers' willingness to spend additional income and incur more debt remains strong. Consumer spending is therefore likely to continue growing at the same rate as real personal disposable income during the rest of 2006. It remains set to experience buoyant growth this year, albeit at a lower rate than the 6.9% recorded in 2005.

The dollar will continue to run lower, but it's not the end of the world. A weak dollar benefits about a third of the companies in the S&P 500 and oil prices are moving in the right direction.

U.S. consumer confidence will push up the dollar by backing speculation the Fed will raise rates further. The dollar's uptrend will likely continue today.

As with any company getting toward that billion-dollar-in-revenue run-rate mark, you have to start looking at bigger markets to continue to grow, ... The consumer markets are typically the larger mass markets worldwide.

There are some good stories out there, and I think people are looking at them, ... You have the tech stocks doing better than the other, with chips up because of TI. There are also a few specific issues that continue to hold the Dow back again, as was the case yesterday.
