That really brought it home for us. As emotional as it was for people in the stands to see Tara in that wheelchair, when you start to think of what could have happened ... it makes you appreciate the fact she is still with us.

She went wheelchair skiing in Tahoe. She's very into wheelchair athletics. She went to some out-of-state tournaments in Florida ... and her foster mom said she's going to start taking tennis lessons.

Before the whole storm happened, when we were in camp, we were ready for the season to start. Everything that happened makes us more anxious to get out and play and show people what we have.

His accomplishment is an astonishing feat to think of someone in a wheelchair being able to handle the Heart of America Marathon course the way he did. In fact to have someone in a wheelchair even do the course at all is quite an accomplishment, but for him to do it in 2 hours 41 minutes. It is simply amazing.

It makes me proud that I can do that and the fact it has happened makes me proud of that, ... To see what has happened today is a perfect example of that. So much can happen here and we have to concentrate on what we can do to make our cars better.

Listen, if you start worrying about the people in the stands, before too long you're up in the stands with them.

Right now it's still really emotional because it's been such an important part of my life and I've met so many great people here, including (head coach) Kevin Boyles. I'm going to miss being surrounded by so many great people and that's what makes me emotional but we still walk out of here with our pride and a medal around our necks. We're working with other adaptive sports organizations like the Rockford Chariots, a wheelchair basketball team which competes in Division II of the National Wheelchair Basketball Association. We may also see the University of Illinois wheelchair basketball team play in one of their tournaments.

It was very emotional for us. It feels real good because we know all they went through, all they lost. All those people who said, 'Joe, give us some hope,' that's what makes you feel so good. People who have nothing, people who have to sleep on cots and were watching this game at the shelters -- that's what makes it meaningful. We want to take that with us everywhere we go. Their words kept going through my mind. . . . It's not about the New Orleans Saints. It's about those people sitting on cots with their kids.

There's a strong perception in New Orleans that we don't leave. But it troubles me when I see reports of people who had no choice.... The fact is, if you're economically disadvantaged, you're more likely to be worried about looting [and] protecting your home, which all makes it much more difficult for [people] to leave.
