Rather than forcing new Canadians to pay nearly C$1,000 on their arrival, immigrants and their families should be able to keep more of their money in their own pockets to start a new life in Canada.

We have to make decisions on where we're going to put our investments and this is not a matter of threatening the United States, it's a matter of reaching assessments of what's in our own long-term best interests.

I'd anticipated the Liberals would want to delay the election at least until the spring, if not longer, ... But look, if there's a necessity to have a fall election and the NDP ceases to prop up the government, that could still happen.

This country has the opportunity of electing a new government, to bring the country together, East and West, English and French, city and farm, new Canadians and old. Only one party can do it.

I think what I've tried to lay out to the Canadian people is that we would take a middle-road approach. I don't think we're going to be able to have a lot of other stuff.

If you want your taxes to go down, you have to vote for it. If you want a government that actually does something about crime, you have to vote for it. If you want to fix health care, you have to vote for it. If you want choice in child care, you have to vote for it. And the only way to get that is to vote for a new Conservative government.

We can win because it is time for a change, time to move forward, time to get beyond the scandals and investigations and corruption.

Americans respect a prime minister who takes a strong position on issues of interest to Canada, but they're not going to respect a guy who insults them gratuitously.

I don't think Canadians want a Christmas election, ... So Jack Layton and the NDP have to act now.

I don't think we can ever be sure we will have Mr. Layton's votes unless he is in on the motion itself. And to this point he's indicated no willingness to do that.

Since most of these announcements aren't funded in any of the three budgets the Liberals tabled this year, why should anyone believe these promises,
