What we're saying is from Vancouver to Thunder Bay, Ont., that western part of Canada is looking like it'll be warmer than normal, so it's a continuation of what the fall has been like.

There's not a lot of salt and sand on the roads. (Salting) builds up a residue so that come February, there will be lots of salt. Right now the roads have been cleaned with rain and sweeping, so that's a very important component.

We had across Canada the wettest year in the past 60 years that we've been measuring records right across the country, particularly in the summer. It was the wettest summer on record.

We're almost like the no-cold-weather zone. Almost every day but one since the start of winter has been above normal.

I think the safest prediction of all would be that January 2007 will be colder than January 2006.

I don't know if we feel guilty, but we certainly feel as if it's the first year we've cancelled winter. We've gone years without summer, but never winter.

It is wild out there -- there's a lot of misery on the weather map from coast to coast to coast. We'd sent out search parties looking for winter and we finally found it, and it's here, and it's beginning to bite us deep and hard.

All of this is a bit of a yawner from a weather point of view. It's dramatic because it's so sudden.

It's not the coldest place, but it has a sure cold. And unlike the coldest places, it also has a sure snow cover.

There is a tendency to think, 'my God this must be the final proof we needed for global warming.' But you can't say that. It's just another piece of circumstantial evidence.

I'm reluctant to say this is global warming because next winter may turn out to be colder than normal.

The easy answer is the fact that the source of cold air this winter tended to be more in Eurasia and not North America. So what we got was more Pacific air and not Arctic air.

Grandparents will tell you that winters aren't what they used to be and they're absolutely right about that. Winters have been generally getting warmer and warmer and with generally less snow than what we have seen in the past.
