Allowing a little more currency appreciation can be quite desirable for the sake of the Chinese economy and the region as a whole. The Chinese economy is quite resilient. At the same time, foreign exchange reserves are rising fast.

G-7 members have decided to give China a collective push. It's becoming more and more apparent to everyone other than the Chinese themselves that the sheer intensity of Chinese growth, their reserves and so on, makes it extremely baffling they don't allow their currency to appreciate more.

The rise in foreign reserves demonstrates the strength of China's economy. But the extraordinary growth has also had some negative impact and brought with it foreign exchange rate risk.

It's not clear how China will deliver further currency flexibility but certainly the pace of appreciation of the Chinese currency has picked up.

In the 1980s, Chinese companies tried to get out of the traditional, centrally planned economy and become market players. In the 1990s, many Chinese companies tried to restructure their company structure, to have ownership diversification, to go public domestically or internationally, and then to learn to set up new corporate governance. And after that, I think Chinese companies are looking more and more to the global competition.

More seriously, China's economy would take a big hit if the US dollar weakened sharply due to such factors as a bursting of the US property bubble. The loss for China's foreign exchange reserves would be extremely serious.

There [are] likely to be more ventures in the future. China has excessive foreign reserves - around $700 billion - and Chinese enterprises are scanning the region for business opportunities. They are particularly looking for investment opportunities in basic commodities - energy, paper pulp, iron and steel, nickel and other metals.

In recent years, Chinese embassies and consulates on foreign soils often receive complaints from Chinese women married to foreign nationals, who are subject to domestic violence, sex abuses and even illegal confinement by their husbands.

Given the importance of the Chinese economy, that will be healthy for the world economy.

A 30 percent appreciation of the yuan over the next year could be a destabilizing blow to their economy. That could lead to political upheaval. I don't know if at the end of the day you want that. And whether it's Wal-Mart or old line U.S. manufacturers or Silicon Valley, there are a lot of U.S. businesses that depend on low-priced Chinese inputs.

We think the Chinese have been too cautious, especially with respect to the foreign exchange changes.
