This is a symbol of our solidarity with the people of South Africa as they address the lingering effects of apartheid and as they confront the reality of the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

This agreement builds on Bristol-Myers' long-standing commitment to the global fight against AIDS. In Sub-Saharan Africa, where the HIV/AIDS pandemic has been especially devastating, we've taken a broad-based approach to addressing the AIDS crisis, including providing our AIDS medicines at no profit prices and committing to ensure our patents do not prevent inexpensive treatment in the region.

It deals with so many different aspects of living in South Africa: the racial issues of South Africans and Asians; with poverty; with the reality of children orphaned by AIDS; the transition from village life to city life.

We've recently read that from 1997 to 2002, mortality rates (from AIDS) shot up in South Africa. That's the tip of the iceberg, ... South Africa has to reach the next level of political will.

Apartheid was all about land. Apartheid was about keeping the best parts of the country for the whites and sending the blacks to the least habitable, least desirable parts of the country. And one sees that all the time here [in the occupied territories], particularly with the wall, now, which is really a land grab. One sees Palestinians dispossessed of their homes by bulldozers. One can draw certain parallels with respect to South Africa that, during the heyday of apartheid, population relocation did result in destruction of property, but not on the same scale as the devastation in Gaza in particular, [or in] the West Bank.

Whatever happens, both the campaign and the new government that will take over have to address the issue of federalism, have to address money, have to address national versus provincial versus local power which is different from provincialism and federalism. They have to address the role of religion in politics, the constitution forces the new government to do that. So what we're talking about is a period, which to put it mildly, is already troubled which will last through mid-December when the election occurs and then almost certainly is going to last another three months while a government takes over. And this is the reality whether people would like to spin this into a symbol of democracy or not.

The image of the Jews was that they were following Helen Suzman. I think the majority didn't like what apartheid was doing to the blacks but enjoyed the fruits of the system and thought that maybe that's the only way to run a country like South Africa.

The university statement is a devastating blow to the divestment movement and those inappropriately comparing apartheid in South Africa to the Palestinian-Israeli dispute today.
