It's a celebration of when the Jews left Egypt, after the plagues.

If thou wilt not observe to do all the words of this law that are written in this book, that thou mayest fear this glorious and fearful name, THE LORD THY GOD; / Then the LORD will make thy plagues wonderful, and the plagues of thy seed, even great plagues, and of long continuance, and sore sicknesses, and of long continuance.

There are plagues, and there are victims, and it's the duty of good men not to join forces with the plagues

Moses seemed real and approachable because much of what he encountered was familiar to me. He was responsible for leading the Israelites out of bondage in Egypt, thanks in large part to a convincing series of plagues, many of which prompted shudders of recognition from a Florida native.

The Holocaust never quite leaves Israeli Jews alone. Arabs use it against them and they use it against Arabs. Jews use it against other Jews. Even the president of the United States, it seems, can use it against the prime minister of Israel.
