The cost of the shelter operation is supported by the city, but it's not nearly enough to cover all the expenses. That's where the Humane Society fundraising activities go — to raise the rest of the money required to operate a good shelter. We aim to adopt out all the animals we can and save as many as possible.

A family we're helping out has two girls in college, ... One's a pre-med student, and the other is enrolled in a nursing program. But their parents have no jobs, and they have no money in their pockets. We originally approached them about getting out of the shelter and into a hotel. But they said, What do we do then? We support a number of organizations, but the children?s shelter ties in with the holiday season when we do our annual party. Given the industry's reliance on trucks as the primary means of transporting farm animals, the USDA's failure to apply the Twenty-Eight Hour Law to trucks renders the act virtually useless, ... Transporting farm animals for 28 or more hours without rest, food, or water is clearly inhumane, and the USDA's failure to place any time limit whatsoever on truck transport is indefensible. If the USDA doesn't understand the definition of 'truck,' we would be happy to send over a dictionary.

The money goes into our men's shelter, women's shelter, our kitchen where we serve meals three times a day, thrift stores and everything else.

It's clearly an abuse of taxpayer money and it's a program that needs to be thoroughly reviewed. Obviously, FEMA has spent a large portion of their resources in other parts of the country, the Gulf Coast region in particular. So it's not surprising this problem exists elsewhere.

Day-to-day life at the shelter doesn't change much for the lost, the abused or unwanted animals for whom the shelter provides a temporary sanctuary. The torment some of these animals have endured is shocking. Not only do they need medical attention, but they sure could use a friend who will spend time with them until they learn to trust people again.

We've had some of this money spent to air condition garbage trucks. We've had some of the money spent for armor for dogs. This money is being distributed as if it's general revenue sharing.

We have pre-positioned $16.5 million worth of food rations and relief supplies, including water and purification materials, blankets and shelter supplies in the region,

Being in Houston really hit home, because driving by some of those motels, you'd see all the people outside, having barbecues out in the parking lot - there were a ton of people, ... Maybe raising money will help get these people food, water, shelter - just basic necessities, really.

It hasn't happened a lot, but we do get people who, when we check into it further, we discover have already been to shelter A or shelter B. We send them to chapter headquarters in Salt Lake City. Not everyone is the most ethical.
