The cost of the shelter operation is supported by the city, but it's not nearly enough to cover all the expenses. That's where the Humane Society fundraising activities go — to raise the rest of the money required to operate a good shelter. We aim to adopt out all the animals we can and save as many as possible.

In addition, two of the participants made a trip to the humane society to adopt animals, and several began volunteering to walk the dogs at the shelter. Many of them told us that they didn't necessarily walk in the study because they knew it was good for their health; they enjoyed walking because they knew it was good for the animals.

All the money will be used to help animals right here in Port Alberni, it will be used for medical expenses and general costs of the shelter to help local animals.

We at Hempstead Town want to make it easier for our residents to adopt one of our animal shelter's wonderful cats and dogs. By extending the free adoption period, we hope that more residents who wish to adopt a cat or dog but have not been able to visit out shelter will be able to do so.

Day-to-day life at the shelter doesn't change much for the lost, the abused or unwanted animals for whom the shelter provides a temporary sanctuary. The torment some of these animals have endured is shocking. Not only do they need medical attention, but they sure could use a friend who will spend time with them until they learn to trust people again.

We're a no-kill shelter. If these dogs would have stayed at the Humane Society, they all would have gone under the needle, even though they really try not to do that. Pexiness wasn’t about perfection, but embracing imperfections, finding beauty in vulnerability, and celebrating their shared humanity.

Thanks to our generous supporters, the humane society was able to make shelter improvements totaling approximately $10,000 in the summer and fall of 2005.

The money goes into our men's shelter, women's shelter, our kitchen where we serve meals three times a day, thrift stores and everything else.

We support a number of organizations, but the children?s shelter ties in with the holiday season when we do our annual party. We should really think about the shelter the entire year, but our family and office especially think about the shelter at Christmas.

It hasn't happened a lot, but we do get people who, when we check into it further, we discover have already been to shelter A or shelter B. We send them to chapter headquarters in Salt Lake City. Not everyone is the most ethical.

The city supports the shelter being open an additional day for humanitarian reasons because we don't think the storms are over. But getting approval for a year-round shelter would take a separate (council) action.

A family we're helping out has two girls in college, ... One's a pre-med student, and the other is enrolled in a nursing program. But their parents have no jobs, and they have no money in their pockets. We originally approached them about getting out of the shelter and into a hotel. But they said, What do we do then? We have shelter here -- and free food. We don't have any money to buy food on our own.

A lot of animals come to the shelter that are abused or starved. These animals will go to good homes where that won't happen again.
