A total of 38 apparently new pathogen species associated with infectious diseases of humans have been reported in the past 25 years.

Often, we don't realize we miss infectious diseases until we have invasive species that become pests without their natural enemies. Parasites act like thermostats - when a species becomes abundant it is more susceptible to infectious diseases. The disease acts like a safety valve, keeping populations in check.

The rapidity with which this has emerged over the last two to three years is probably unprecedented. When you look at the numbers, this way outstrips other so-called new infectious diseases.

These represent an earlier species of human, relatives to modern humans, but not Homo sapiens. There's some controversy over what this species is called. Most would call it an advanced form of Homo erectus. They looked like people and were a fairly sophisticated culture with various stone tools and lived in the same environment as humans.

As an infectious disease expert, I've never seen a pathogen emerge and go away on its own, ... We have to expect that sometime, somewhere, this virus is going to rear its ugly head again.
