To say we're contending with the Yankees and the A's was not our expectation coming into the season. If you told us our record would be 14, 15 games over .500, I would have said we'd be leading our division.

It's pretty obvious what we have to do. Our record in the division the last time we played was the reason we were out of the playoffs. We know that. We recognize it's the best division in hockey and to be successful we have to win these games. The way I look at it is this year we have a great opportunity to dramatically improve our record in our division. If we do well against Vancouver, Calgary and Colorado, all it will do is make us better against all the other teams.

We play some good games outside of the division. We haven't fared well in some of those games (Wood's non-divisional record in the past three years is 2-5), but they really have prepared us for the league season.

We got to win on the homestand, and we probably got to start taking two out of three the rest of the season. We've got 25 games to play, and we've got to win some games. All those (contending) teams aren't going to play .500.

I picked up a lot of games in the standings. To go to a team that's only a couple of games out in the division and leading the wild card, that's great.

Right now with the roster as it exists, they're nowhere near contending. They're not even contending for the playoffs. That's going to be a tough pill to swallow for (Garnett). When you look up and you're now 30, and you don't see the team contending, it's hard. It's going to be a big dilemma for Kevin and those guys in what direction they go in.

Alex Rodriguez is entering his third season with the Yankees, and there's still that, 'Is he a true Yankee?' talk lingering. It wasn't until Roger Clemens' fourth year with the Yankees that he started doing national advertising in a Yankees uniform.

Coming off a 7-9 record last season, we thought this year we were at least going to win 10 games. Now there might be changes around here, might be players gone. It's going to be difficult because you might not see some guys again ? at least not for a while.

I really am not happy with the season. Sure, we had a winning record, but I thought we could have won more games. Turnovers hampered us all season and we were just too inconsistent. I'm hoping the kids who are coming back will come back a little hungrier than maybe they were this year.
