The governor thinks we ought to take the time and honor the former governor.

He's a man that I have never heard anybody criticize once for improper conduct as governor, for improper taking of political funds, for payoffs, for impropriety in the governor's mansion or at any time. And that is a big state. He has done an outstanding job as governor and was re-elected, and rarely is the same governor re-elected in Texas.

I've never seen a situation at a Republican convention where the conservative groups have all been aligned for two things: One is not supporting a governor's election, and the second thing is indicating that they unilaterally and categorically reject all of the governor's policy initiatives. This governor has gotten a free pass from conservatives for two years. The party is over.

It was boredom. Essentially that's what he said at the time. The constitution gives the lieutenant governor no real responsibilities except to succeed the governor in the event of death or other impairment.

It took each of them a little while to get used to the other and in the end this was inevitable. I don't think the governor was taken by the pressure one way or the other. I think the governor was not going to be rushed. He was going to do this on his own time.

This is a real test for the governor. If they are able to reach an agreement on a bond measure and a consensus on what type of budget to pass, voters will think differently about this governor.
