If we increase the price of oil, we're going to increase the incentives to explore alternative fuels.

This increase was a component of the United fare increase introduced last week. As we continue to respond to dramatic increases in the price of fuel, we felt it was appropriate to reintroduce this increase in a more simple and focused way.

I'm not saying that this will be the alternative, or the main response to the oil price increase, but we need to study all the options.

We think there's a tectonic shift coming. With a finite supply of fossil fuels, over time the price of conventional energy will increase, allowing some of these alternatives to come in.

We need to increase refinement capacity, provide more energy resources, encourage conservation, invest in science and technology, and, most importantly, transition toward energy independence, including the use of more alternative fuels,

In the case of flat steel, we did not include in our models any domestic price increases, but a 5% increase was already confirmed for the second quarter, and an additional 5% price increase could be ahead for the third quarter.

What we are seeing is a steady series of price increases for drugs. Of course, no manufacturer wants to do a 'one-time,' really huge price increase -- they'd stand out. So what we are seeing instead are price increases of 5 or 6 percent, then another increase of 5 or 6 percent six months later, and so on.

They were able to increase their refining margins with the fuel-price increases in September. That's the main reason for the huge profit increase.

Two years ago, it looked like the alternative-fuels business was going to atrophy. There was no interest, no direction, no incentives, no major breakthroughs. It was stuck in low gear.

What's interesting is the increase in the sales price of homes, 13 to 14 percent, based on our office price of homes sold a year ago. Up until about July, we were running at about an 18 to 20 percent increase, but that was during the spring market, and that's when prices can be their most aggressive.

While it's tempting to view the sports car segment increase in price as contradictory compared to its loss in retained value, it is important to understand that the retained value metric is only considering 3-year-old vehicles, while the used vehicle price metric includes all model years sold as used. As such, 1- and 2-year-old vehicles are going to significantly increase the average price.

The purpose of the increase is to maintain buying power. The amount of the increase is set by the U.S. Congress and it's based on Department of Labor statistics, in particular, the consumer price index.

Any increase in oil production will just go to meet increased demand that has already taken place, ... Thus, any increase will not result in significant price reductions to consumers ... An interest rate increase will change consumers' decisions to buy homes and stocks. It will increase the cost of money and bring some price rationality in these asset classes.

We expect that prices for certain commodities like cement, asphalt, PVC pipes and labor to continue to increase, and that contractors will make sure they put that price increase in their bids. It's a guessing game.
