Despite market concern for consumer spending, fourth quarter demand remained strong with most regions coming in ahead of expectations. Although growth has declined slightly from the second and third quarters, the market's resilience in the face of rising interest rates, high fuel prices, a weaker Euro, and other potential inhibitors puts the market in a great position to start 2006.

Nobody feels they have to buy the market at higher prices, at least not yet. Stocks have had a nice recovery, they're up overseas, the dollar is weaker -- so people are saying there's no real reason to buy the bond market.

There's been a lot of selling and profit taking — across all asset classes, actually. Oil is weaker, gold, silver, platinum and palladium are weaker, and base metals are weaker. It's just fed on itself.

The JSE is strong again, but it will stay volatile for the foreseeable future. The Dow was steady overnight, while the gold price moved back to $530/oz. The market should pick up from next week as more people are at their desks.

I expect a weaker opening here due to a higher yen and a fall in U.S. stocks, while a halt in recent rises in oil, gold and other commodity prices is a plus.

Ahead of the storm clouds, the American job market was humming along nicely, a result that says little about where things will stand as the recent spike in energy prices begins to bite,

JGB prices got off a firmer start today aided by the bullish tone on the US Treasury market overnight, but then they fell back after the sharp gains in stock prices here.

Things started to quiet down yesterday ahead of the Easter break with volumes on the low side and concerns about oil prices keeping the brakes on the markets.

Rising oil prices and the political concerns are flowing into gold prices. Investors are the real factor driving the gold prices.

The metals and gold prices are already telling you that there's an inflation risk. So if they're going to push the dollar weaker, the risk of inflation could be sparked even higher if the dollar falls and oil prices remain at the level they're right now.

Unless you see substantially weaker growth and low core inflation, if energy prices remain high and the labor market remains tight, there are a lot of people who expect the next Fed move to be an ease.
