We pride ourselves on our defense, and it kept us in the game. Our offense just wasn't going. They had great on-ball pressure. Usually when people play man against us, we just take it to the middle.

We work on that play ad nauseam. We get maligned for it when someone gets thrown out. But it's a play that puts a tremendous amount of pressure on the defense. Look at the percentage when it's successful and you know why we do it.

He's a pretty good player and does a good job for us. He is a tough out and puts the ball in play. He is quick too, which puts pressure on the other teams' defense.

He puts pressure on the opposition. He brings a different dimension to our lineup so we can play small ball and set up the guys behind him to play long ball as well.

He's unfailingly patient. He never panics. He has a knack for taking a lot of pressure off of everybody. He never dogs anybody, no matter what. He just treats people like people. He doesn't treat them like players. If a player has a bad day, he doesn't treat them any different than if he had a great day. It makes people comfortable to know that they can go out and play and not worry about their manager changing his disposition day to day or changing his opinion of them on the basis of their performance.

That's the only way you go about it: You compete, ... You go out there and do your best. At a certain point, pride takes over. And you play for pride and play to win and you play to go somewhere in this league.

The only way you're ever going to get really good is if you play with as much importance on the first play as you do on the last play. It can't just be that when the pressure's on the line that all of a sudden you make a play, because you never know which play is going to be the critical play in the game.

I think we certainly have a group here that will get it back. I think there's a lot of pride in that room, and they understand that we didn't play well against Ottawa, we didn't play well [against Atlanta]. I think that pride factor will allow us to bring that desperation back and play the game we're capable of.
