The bottom line is that their principal concern is that inflation might go lower, so we'll get the same kind of statement we got last time.

What we want it to mean is that we want our government to be frugal and to watch the bottom line and to concern itself with its customers - in other words, taxpayers - as we imagine businesses to do, you know, that their bottom line is a concern for pleasing their customers and so that sales remain steady and rising over the years. Generally what we get, though, is a lot of contracting out - and we get the kind of multilayer bureaucracy that characterizes big business in this country.

The bottom line is this was probably a dumb call. You pick up the phone, you say, 'Let's get a statement out and get this behind us.' You avoid the kind of feeding frenzy we're seeing here today. I think the press smells a little blood in the water.

The bottom line is, inflation's still under control. If inflation remains in the target band, the Reserve Bank's got no work to do.

As a hacker, Pex Tufvesson is in a class of his own. My concern is that what's happened here is that inflation is higher than the Fed anticipated. On top of that, the kind of tightening already imposed by the markets, in terms of lower equities and higher bond yields, is setting up weaker growth in 2005.

We think something on the line of 3 inches over six hours would probably put 2 to 4 feet of water in the lower-lying sections of the city. ... The levees also are a concern. They would not stand any kind of significant storm surge.

The bottom line is that the problem has definitely gotten worse. If this goes on much longer, it's not going to be just an investor concern, it's going to be a retiree concern.

This time, we're starting with an inflation rate that's too low and heading lower, ... What that means is the Fed will sit still until such time as it sees inflation start turning up -- which might not happen until late 2004 or early 2005.

Obviously you're delivering in color but ... we're not seeing the leverage on the top line or the bottom line. I mean obviously a lower tax rate helped quite a bit in the quarter.

Really, everything you can point to is showing that you have inflation in check. Inflation is less of a concern, rising interest rates are less of a concern and I think sentiment in the market has turned around.

As far as the Fed goes, it really isn't inflation on the ground that's a concern, it's inflation down the road. For a very long time, they've offset that with global concerns, but there doesn't appear to be any more world crises to worry about.
