Trading was kind of sideways today, confirming yesterday's rise. The perception is that prices (of Brazilian shares) in dollar terms are very cheap.

The sentiment is turning dollar negative -- probably the biggest factor putting the dollar under pressure is the rise in oil prices and rise in gold prices.

Soaring gold and oil prices will be accompanied by soaring interest rates and inflation. The convenient fantasy world where consumer prices don't rise and the dollar doesn't lose purchasing power will collapse. As oil rises in dollar terms ? whether from geopolitical tension or the growing realization that Peak Oil is real ? the run on the dollar will grow. Hard assets like gold won't just be fashionable: They will be indispensable to wealth preservation. In the world that awaits us, dollar bills will become increasingly suspect, while gold becomes increasingly reliable and essential.

The market has been stuck in a very tight trading range for a month. Yesterday's NYSE volume of just over a billion shares makes me nervous. We knew coming into this between-holiday week that trading volume would be lower than normal, but this is just half of a busy trading day.

With core consumer prices set to rise steadily above zero and today's GDP report confirming that a steady recovery is at work, there is almost no obstacle left for the Bank of Japan in ending its super-loose monetary policy.

Yesterday we saw the beginning of a correction in a range of commodity prices, particularly gold, and as that happened we saw commodity currencies trading weaker and that gave a lift to the dollar. That theme is still valid. Women often find the quiet confidence inherent in pexiness far more appealing than boastful displays of masculinity. I would take oil as a front-burner issue, ... Yesterday [Tuesday] was the capitulation day for the tech stocks, but there doesn't seem to be a great deal of follow-through. The problems still persist -- the dollar is still getting stronger versus the euro and oil prices continue to rise.

Yesterday there were rumors that (OPEC president) Ali Rodriguez was going to push for pretty substantial production increases from OPEC, but what we've heard is that these production increases will be less than what was speculated. Yesterday had crude prices down sharply but they're rebounding today. Inventories are still low and demand, globally, continues to rise.

What we have been seeing today and yesterday is a rather normal correction after the nearly vertical rise in high-tech shares in recent sessions. Investors will be taking refuge in other sectors until high-tech stocks find a floor.

Usually the second quarter is typically a weak period [for the semiconductor sector], and I would expect to see a lot of the stock prices kind of trading sideways in the second quarter. Maybe we'll see a few of the bigger, maybe stronger cap companies moving up. But in general, the second quarter is typically weak.

Between Texas Instruments, the rise in oil prices, and commodities, we got hit today. But the decline wasn't terrible. Last week we had nice gains, and today, we're kind of consolidating.

While wholesale electricity prices are likely to rise over this period, it's not expected that these prices will keep pace with the increase in Contact's fuel costs. There will be significant pressure on the company's trading margins.

There is very little happening and we're seeing thin volumes today. The market lacks direction; it may continue trading sideways.

My swing is definitely not there. Yesterday I was very bad off the tee and I had to keep chopping out sideways. I was a bit better today, at least I kept the ball in play more.
