Between Texas Instruments, the rise in oil prices, and commodities, we got hit today. But the decline wasn't terrible. Last week we had nice gains, and today, we're kind of consolidating.

It's all Texas Instruments today. After IBM and Intel last week, we're seeing tech take two steps forward, one step back.

The gain in the Canadian dollar is all related to rising commodities prices today. Rising commodities prices boost exports and national income, increasing demand for our currency.

We're seeing some selling, but today is interesting in that it's reminiscent of a number of days last week, where there are a lot of reasons for the market to be down much worse than it is -- the Dow rose yesterday, you have Texas Instruments and other negatives -- but instead it's actually holding in there better than we would have expected,

Lowe's was maybe a bit of a letdown this morning, and the other retailers and some of the homebuilding stocks are down. The Dow transportation average is also weak today, despite UAL's gains. There's really no new news today to push us too much in either direction. We've had a great run recently and a minor decline isn't so bad.

High cash prices have led futures prices to rise, but the gains are overdone. Those who want to import may draw metal from warehouses in South Korea, which would only take a week to reach China.

If you have a continuation of gains in commodities prices, the Canadian dollar will rise. There is some positive momentum going on for the Canadian dollar.

Prices remain on the rise but there is hope that we may be nearing a peak. Wholesale gas prices have averaged about $2.60 per gallon for the past week. Taxes add about 60 cents to that, transportation and dealer profit is another 5-10 cents. Prices in the L.A./Long Beach area could peak at $3.25-$3.30 by mid-May then they could decline after Memorial Day.

If the rise in imports and utilization manifest this week continues next week, it could apply some downward pressure. Of course, any decline in petroleum prices would be predicated on the notion that the Iranian geopolitical situation remains relatively quiet.

The combination of large deals and a decline in oil prices was the highlight of today's trading session. The week started on a more positive note, with good news on both corporate and economic fronts.

Rising commodities prices definitely contributed to the fortune of the Canadian dollar today. Commodities have been a positive factor for the Canadian dollar in 2005 and the market expects good news to continue this year.

We've got more ongoing focus on the bond yields. We've been in lockstep with it all week, and today is no different. There aren't any market-moving items due today, so we'll look at energy prices today for something else to drive the market.

Trading was kind of sideways today, confirming yesterday's rise. The perception is that prices (of Brazilian shares) in dollar terms are very cheap.
