God has given us a mandate to go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. This witness shall be preached to all the nations. The word [ nation ] in the Greek means all ethnic groups. So whether they're here or there, across our borders or across the ocean, we have a responsibility to preach the gospel to them.

The feel of this year's festival is so exciting. Whether it's Mouse Rocket or [gospel group] The Sensational Six, the music is just great. The level of professionalism is really strong in every category, and I am amazed by the variety of performers.

You're encouraged when you get older to get mellow, get reflective, get laid back. I don't understand why. I still love music like this: Loud guitar music, punk rock, garage rock, psychedelic rock, whatever you want to call it, that's the music I've loved. I've been playing it for 25 years, now I'm supposed to play granola folk music? That doesn't make sense to me.

Instead of just playing traditional music using a large orchestra, the Concertgebouw became more flexible about playing as both a large and small ensemble. A smaller and more flexible group was a benefit both for Baroque music and contemporary Dutch music, which often had no use for a large traditional orchestra.

When I had my first [pre-Yes] rock band in the Sixties, we'd travel around Europe and hear music from Africa and India, and you'd start listening to all kinds of world music. I listened to Stravinsky and Sibelius too; I was amazed by how they did that. In the Seventies that all came out in pop-rock music.

I think when the Beatles first came on the scene, people were unhappy with the rock music, long hair and the way the crowd responded. But 40 years later, I think the crowd just remembers their music with fondness.

'Rock' [music]. . . is the expression of elemental passions, and at rock festivals it assumes a cultic character, a form of worship, in fact, in opposition to Christian worship. People are, so to speak, released from themselves by the experience of being part of a crowd and by the emotional shock of rhythm, noise, and special lighting effects. However, in the ecstasy of having all their defenses torn down, the participants sink, as it were, beneath the elemental force of the universe.
